British forces under Marshal Haig press along the front from Lassigny to Arras opening a fresh attack. The advance reaches two miles depth over a four mile front with Monchy le Preux Guemappe and Wancourt taken. German salient remains between Wancourt and Bullecourt as evacuation of Chioselles appears forced.
British patrols entered Bapaume as Haig’s forces closed in on the German base and seized key towns along the Albert Bapaume road. French and British units report heavy counterattacks and captures including Warlencourt Eaucourt and Sapignies with 40,000 German prisoners overall. Austro-Hungarian units and officers are reported captured on the western front as Mangin’s army advances toward the Chemin des Dames.
In the National League Chicago beat Brooklyn 5-1 with a 3-2 score. Cincinnati toppled Boston 7-2 by 8-0. New York St. Louis had no game. In the American League Washington defeated Chicago 6-5 while Chicago fell 0-3.
Captured German prisoners say with many POWs against Germany a win is impossible. They think the Entente cannot enter Germany due to feared destruction seen in France, and that Germany will defend to the last man. They warn immediate peace is needed to avert invasion.
At an Atlantic port on August 26 a ruptured steampipe in the coal hold of a U S transport, a German liner seized at the war outbreak, killed seven civilian workers employed by a lighterage company loading coal for government vessels.
Desultory artillery duels along the entire front are announced by the Italian war office. Enemy troops marching are dispersed in Val Tellina and Brenta valley back on the Giudiceria River. Our aviators bombed camps in Legarina valley and Frinli plains.
Paris reports a successful British advance in the early hours along the Scarpe river. Faureuil and other positions were captured within a short battle, marking notable progress for the attackers this morning.
British troops push gains southeast of Monri and west of Croiselles after stubborn holds. Movement continues toward Méricourt as forces improve positions northeast of the area.
The Cubs clinched the National League pennant and the World Series will start September 4 in Chicago. The first three games are scheduled at Chicago, with the remainder in Boston if needed, under adjusted travel plans to ease railroad congestion.
British and American forces push forward along the Vesle and Aisne fronts as German resistance flags. U S troops advance north of the Soissons Reims road and clear Rois du Diable wood while observers note fires and mounting German withdrawals north of the Vesle. Reports say Germans expect a possible negotiated peace as flank advances threaten northern lines.
In Marseilles Corsica is stirred by the Balkan sinking after a torpedo attack. Many women and children perished as the liner plied between Corsica and the mainland. The event is likened to the Lusitania disaster.
A car collision in Lacapeport near Camden, Indiana, killed two adults identified as Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mitpia and Mrs. Pearl Lante and Mrs. Guy Taylor, a three-year-old child, and possibly Todney. An interurban struck the automobile.
Maj Willem and a San Diego team of a British American flying circus started from Nomapalia to Re Leis when a stall caused a nose dive into a cornfield at Molugisun MH. Lt Benker suffered a compound leg fracture and internal injuries. He is reported in serious condition as the group faced severe rain during the landing attempt.
The House approved the administration manpower bill by 826 to 2, extending the draft age to 18–45. Amendments exempt congress and state legislators, place farmers in deferred class, and allow reexaminations by local boards. Senate action and various procedural aims noted. several amendments defeated or altered.
