The British Fourth army reports capture of Bray on the Somme and encirclement of Bapaume, with British forces within two miles. The advance over more than twelve miles of front is rapid, yielding many prisoners and large quantities of guns and materiel.
British forces resume attacks along the entire front in the Albert sector and press toward Bapaume. A four mile penetration of German lines extends over a twelve mile front as villages and supplies fall.
London reports Haig's forces near the Baupomme rail junction advancing from Albert toward Grandcourt and Achiet Le Grand as French troops cross the Dive into Evricourt region. Allied gains include captured towns Bihucourt and Achiet Le Grand with 100000 prisoners since July 18 as German defenses collapse along a broad front.
British steamer Diomed torpedoed and sunk off the Atlantic coast. Over 100 crew rescued by Buenos Aires. American steamer Grays Harbor destroyed by boiler explosion, two killed. Captain Myhre of the seized Triumph said a German sub sunk a 5,000 ton steamer and that the raider commander had patrolled New York for 15 years.
The Shipping Board announced ten ships were added to the American merchant fleet in the week ended August 16. The week saw the launch of six steel vessels and four wooden ships, totaling 53 850 tons.
London reports the British have captured about 14 000 prisoners along with ammunition arms and supplies as they push along the front from near Lihon north to the Cojeul river. Complete batteries of howitzers are seized and the advance continues rapidly with ongoing captures.
With the American Army in France, August 24, American forces have made new gains in attacks along the Vesle river between Fismes and Rheims. The Germans are burning buildings and supplies behind their lines to dispose of material that cannot be moved to the rear.
The American Fleet Railway association meeting here urges federal action to save electric railways from bankruptcy. They cite War Trade Board wage increases for motor men and conductors and report a 94 percent drop in net income for 154 companies in the first quarter of 1918. They warn general wage awards could wipe out net income and absorb over half of fixed charges. The group backs government control of electric railway rates now before President Wilson.
The week ending August 10 saw a large rise in sick and wounded soldiers arriving from the expeditionary forces. A total of 888 landed, up from 65 the previous week, with men sent to designated hospitals and rehabilitation facilities for care.
Italian war department reports central powers attacked Italian lines from the lower Semen river to Mall Tomorices heights in Albania. The assault was repulsed by the Trallana forces.
Washington reports Commander William Price Williamson of the Navy was killed in an accident aboard a warship. Born in Virginia in 1884, he was appointed to the Naval Academy from Wisconsin.
Five important German towns and five hostile airfields were heavily bombarded by British serial squadrons during the night of August 21 22. Frankfort and Cologne military objectives were heavily attacked with good results reported by the air ministry.
Major General Monash commands the Third Australian division. His rapid rise began with his 1887 appointment as lieutenant in the Australian Citizens' corps. He served as chief censor for Australia at the war's outbreak and fought at Gallipoli. He is noted as a civil engineer who pioneered reinforced concrete construction in Australia.
London reports fire from Transbaikalia Czech forces capturing Berehmendinsek south of Lake Baikal and driving Bolshevik troops back. Ussuri front battles force Allied withdrawal as Japanese help. Petapoff, Murmansk commander, reportedly captured by peasants and handed to Allies amid chaotic fighting.
London August 24 reports the Daily Express states Japan is pursuing a policy aligned with the United States regarding the occupation and control of Tokyo based companies.
