British forces have established themselves in the northern part of Bapaume and advanced toward Bompierre near the Somme. They pushed through Montauban, captured the wood, reached Longueval, and took many prisoners with sizeable material gains.
American troops advance along the Vesle east of Fismes driving Germans from the railway and taking a key position. Pendleton awarded Belgian war cross for gallantry after aiding reconnaissance and earning honorary membership in the Regiment des Guides.
A navy report says six crewmen were drowned or killed by a torpedo explosion when the American steamer Lake Eden sank in foreign waters on August 21. Nine crew members and one naval guard were missing, with several named as among the dead or unaccounted for.
Washington August 27 A house bill suspending customs duties on Red Cross imports was passed by the Senate and sent to President Wilson for his approval.
British troops penetrated the Hindenburg line today near Henin in France. The breakthrough occurred south of the Cogues River, about midway between Bullecourt and Arras where the line nears the current battle front.
Zurich reports the German minister of war acknowledging defeats while British and Allied forces push toward a Rhine position. Washington notes Prussian leaders warn of a hard winter and continued sacrifice as unrest grows in Germany over army size and war prospects. Vienna faces coal shortages threatening glass factories.
Rome Aug 27 American airmen attacked the Austrian naval base at Pola on the Adriatic. One plane fell into the sea and was rescued by fellow airmen who destroyed the damaged aircraft. Pola lies about 100 miles southeast of Venice. British and Italian forces bombed Palazzo Caraeola while British planes hit Catero railway station submarine depot and hangar.
British forces under Field Marshal Haig push northeast from Arras across the Scarp river and advance south of Bapaume amid continuing front progress. The日 report notes further gains along the British line in the area.
By unanimous consent the senate will vote no later than four o'clock on the man power bill extending drafts ages to eighteen to forty five. Debate limited after one o'clock. The house bill replaces the draft measure for quicker action. The senate amendments include work or fight and disqualifications for a soldier’s wife from government jobs.
Paris reports French troops advanced this morning in the St Marc region despite strong enemy counter attacks, which had been repulsed. The operation comes as French forces push forward amid ongoing combat in the area.
Amsterdam dispatches say an entire German battalion mutinied but was quickly crushed. The report claims every tenth soldier was shot as punishment in the incident.
A Stockholm dispatch reports up to August 19 Finland had 32,701 arrests related to the insurrection. Of these, 3,642 were it. By August 17, 15,055 persons were unconditionally sentenced and 14,732 conditionally. The total acquitted stood at 1,775.
Washington reports Navy quartermasters Dale Vern Campbell of Portland Oregon and Lester Achan Barnett of Mount Pleasant Tennessee were killed August 22 in a seaplane accident off French waters.
President Wilson and senate leaders discuss delaying national prohibition to July 1, 1919, to fit war revenue needs. Negotiations indicate agreement on passage with an extended effective date, avoiding disruption to liquor revenue for the 1918-19 year. Senator Sheppard says administration does not oppose action, while opponents seek a longer extension.
The September draft call totals 7,783 men to be entrained for service. Of these, 126,400 white and 21,270 colored men are slated for general military duty and 503 white men for limited service. Crowder, Provost Marshal General, authorized the call.
National League results show New York 2 to 4 loss at St Louis 0 to 1 and Boston Cincinnati did not play due to rain while Philadelphia Pittsburgh were also rained out. American League scores list Philadelphia 6 to 6 Cleveland 24 Boston 2 Detroit 6 New Torre 0 St Louis 2 Washington 12 Chicago 2.
About 260 000 unnamed German males in the United States registered with police and postmasters under alien regulations. The January registration covered males. reports on German women have not yet been tabulated. The estimated total excludes civilians and unseen groups.
Copenhagen reports King Leopold of Horaria announced the engagement of Crown Prince Krupprecht to Princess Antoinette of Luxembourg in an official state telegram from Munich.
Theodore Roosevelt published a tally of war charity donations from the Nobel Peace Prize proceeds. Beneficiaries include American Red Cross 6900 dollars and Y M C A related groups in France and war efforts in Europe, with other allocations to Jewish welfare, Salvation Army and various overseas relief efforts.
Navy reports a seaplane with crew vanished after a collision off the island. Ensign Donald C. Pero, W. Jaegel, chief machinist mate, and F. A. Newman were aboard. one plane reportedly left and sank immediately, others searched but no trace found.
