An Iowa editorial argues that a nationwide seed germination test of at least six kernels per ear could boost corn yields by about 10 bushels per acre. With 10 million corn acres, the gain could reach 100 million bushels worth $50 million. testing costs are minimal compared to losses from bad ears.
Farmers are urged to test seed corn as a business move to lift state prosperity. Prof. Holden advocates germination tests of six kernels per ear, showing how poor stands waste land and labor. Iowa could gain 20 to 40 bushels per acre with tested seed, increasing state wealth by hundreds of millions.
A miscellaneous bridal shower was given Saturday afternoon at the Ball home for Miss Lulu Young, the bride elect of Carl McPadden. Miss Hester Ball, Miss Margaret McKenney, and other young ladies attended. Music and games provided entertainment, and many useful articles were presented to the bride. Refreshments were served.
The Presby terian congregation votes to spend 5500 on improvements and 2800 for a new pipe organ to be installed September first. Plans include a steam heating plant bowled floors frescoing and other repairs. Ladies raised 2800 for the organ and three new trustees were elected M D Rodabaugh to fill Wade’s seat for one year Roth and Miller to serve longer terms.
A group of Eldon youths, joined by Helen McGrew Belle O Brien and Bonnie Vernon, traveled to the Log Cabin on Saturday evening at 5 30 and enjoyed an open fire meal despite the bad weather. They returned by the 11 o'clock train.
Mues Bradford and wife spent Sunday at the Oscar Bradlie r. Mrs Harry Bradford and Mrs Myrtle Bradford were Ottumwa visitors Friday. Carl spent Sunday with Mrs Lorene Carmichael and Mrs Zoe Archibald of Batavia over Sunday at the parental Harness home. Mr and Mrs Ed Baldwin spent Sunday with Harley Johnson near Birmingham. Harness spent Sunday with Ca er Lawsom. Carl Rudolph left last week for Lincoln Nebraska to remain some time. Mr and Mrs Joseph Hodges spent Sunday with their son Ed near Birmingham.
Miss May Hafferty spent Thursday in town with Fay Riggs. John Glotfelty visited Mr. and Mrs. James Henderson. Mr. and Mrs. M. O. Bradford were guests of Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Bradford near Collett. The Hendersons stayed with Mrs. Henderson's mother in Packwood. Roy Price moved his warehouse to the Mrs. Laughlin lot. Mr. Swainson is adding a store room extension.
Henry Proband living east of the city suffered a heavy loss when 300 young chicks and three incubators filled with eggs were destroyed by fire likely caused by an incubator lamp explosion. He awoke to flames around four this morning and found his chick house ablaze with the structure and contents entirely ruined.
Dr. Robert E. Byers of Batavia wed Miss Ruth Hull of Ottumwa yesterday afternoon at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Louis Mendenhall. Witnesses were Dr. and Mrs. Byers, and the newlyweds left on the nine o clock train for Batavia to occupy their furnished home. Hull, a daughter of John Hull Ottumwa School Board member, is a well known Ottumwa girl. Byers is a young Batavia dentist.
In a quiet Sunday ceremony at the home of Mr and Mrs Adam Lynn on West Burlington street Nellie Lynn united in marriage with Everett B Lane. Rev G W Smith officiated the Baptist service. The couple will reside in the groom’s South Depot street home and start housekeeping. Among guests were Mr and Mrs William Garrett of Brighton.
A. L. Heminger of Keosauqua, Van Buren County superintendent, visits the city. The educator, with statewide reputation, is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Superintendent of Public Instruction. He holds degrees from the Normal, liberal arts, and law departments of Iowa State University and has broad experience in school work and higher education.
Hon John W Rowley of Keosanpua conducted a census training at the Fairfield courthouse on Monday afternoon. He urged careful preparation for the 1910 enumeration Friday and shared decades of supervisory experience to aid local workers in gathering accurate data.
Anthony J. Drexel Jr. and Miss Majorie Gwynne Gould marry at St Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in New York. The ceremony is followed by a reception at the Gould residence on Fifth Avenue. The Drexel family, long tied to finance and J Pierpont Morgan, blends with the Goulds in a union said to merge great estates and social circles.
Yesterday morning at St Josephs Catholic church in Pleasant Plain Veronica Fritz and Joseph Kurtz were married by Rev J M Walsh of Washington. Only a few friends attended. The bride, popular in Jefferson County, worked at the Fair store and knows many here. The groom, a prosperous young farmer of Pleasant Plain, is highly esteemed.

Mrs Helen C Brown who bakes wedding cakes seeks police protection for the Gould Drexel nuptials cake and its packaging. The cake for Marjorie Gould will be packed in 800 heart shaped boxes costing 2600 dollars with white satin covers and a crescent design. Tiffany made them. Silver boxes will hold slices for the immediate family. Boxes are on site and detectives will guard them.
The McCall bill on campaign contributions publicity passed the house of representatives with only Rep. Mann of Illinois voting against it. He argued the bill would force major committees to file receipts and expenditures and obligate unions and federations to do the same before elections.
South Bend Indiana reports Albert E. Kable aged 16 struck by a rain-wet hat that bridged a live wire on a downed pole after heavy snow. He died as officials note five inches of snow causing damage to trees and shrubs in the area.
Kansas City April 19 Judge Reed opens prosecution in the trial of Dr. B C Hyde charged with poisoning and murdering Col Thomas H Swope in a courtroom packed to capacity as the opening statement is delivered.
