Assault at Batavia Depot Reported by Officials
Sheriff Neibert and County Attorney Huglin investigated an alleged assault on Miss Viola Widger of Batavia at Bernhart station near nine o'clock Monday evening. The 42 year old washer-woman claims Samuel Whitmore attacked her as she waited for a train to return home. Whitmore lives about a half mile west of Bernhart.

March 1910 in Jefferson County began mild and ended with blooming early fruits. Only one clouded day and light frosts, with thunder on the 18th and 25th bringing rain. A local oil prospect bore to 1000 feet by month end. Spielman Golden Wedding Celebrated Here Sunday
Captain and Mrs. John A Spielman pioneer settlers of Jefferson county celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at home on South Main Street. Surrounded by five of six children and families they enjoyed a day of happiness with a family dinner at the Legett House. He came to Iowa from Ohio in 1840 and wed Christina Hirschberger in 1860 at Germanville. He was active in church affairs serving as Iowa Synod trustee for 17 years and delegate to general synod six times. He helped establish English Lutheran churches in Davenport and Sioux City and contributed to county commerce as a vice president of the First National Bank.

Longtime Fairfield Couple Mark Golden Wedding Anniversary
Captain and Mrs. Spielman, ages 75 and 69, celebrated a joint milestone with family and friends. He organized Wide Awakes and led a company in the 17th Infantry before commanding during Grant’s Vicksburg campaign. After the war he ran a hardware store in Fairfield then retired about ten years ago. Their summers were spent at Lake Okoboji at the “Spielhaus” and their children live in Chicago Topeka and Fairfield.

Eighteen years since John Spielman married Miss Kittie Voorhies and three years since Pred G Spielman wed Miss Harriet Israel, with relatives from Topeka Chicago and the local city attending a home dinner and floral decorations.
Iowa Cavalry Major Walker among county field officers still living
B. Walker aged 71 served in Company H Third Iowa Cavalry. He rose from Corporal to Major. Among six county field officers only Robert Creamer remains, with Majors A R Price, Walker, Harry Jordan, and Drs R J Mohr and P N Woods, now deceased.

Badly Injured at R I Bridge Worker Struck by Mallet
Anthony Smith of the Rock Island bridge gang was seriously hurt while working on Cedar Creek bridge near the city. A fast passenger train struck the mallet he dropped, throwing him into Cedar Creek twenty feet below. He was rescued, treated for back and shoulder injuries, and later to be moved to Missouri if able.

Wolf Hunt in Cedar Township Echoes Pioneer Days
In Cedar township Jefferson county residents organized 12 men with dogs and guns to hunt wolves after sheep losses. Six young wolves were captured, dens found, old wolves sighted but not caught, and a bounty of twelve dollars total was claimed for the captured wolves at the county auditor’s office.
