Telegraph reports Joshua Hammond postmaster of Patchogue disappeared about two weeks ago with $1500 in government funds. His body was found near Fire Island. His son Charles, later arrested for opening registered letters, says an acquaintance Fred Willis tempted him to steal the money to buy a tricycle. Authorities doubt guilt of all parties.
The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania affirmed the Philadelphia Court of Quarter Sessions finding George A. G. Gorson guilty of murdering his wife and mother in law, sustaining first degree murder. The whaling bark Seine of New Bedford was wrecked June 28 on the west coast of Africa near the Mourse River, eighty miles north of fresh water. Sixteen men reached shore, two Portuguese seamen drowned, steward Edmund Dobson disappeared after attempting to swim to safety, and the crew endured a perilous trek to a Portuguese station while rationing water and food.

October 10 The State Exposition has drawn northern investment into North Carolina with large lumber and mineral deals. A buyer contracted 500000 feet of black walnut lumber from BfeCowell & Co for a northern plane manufacturer. An agent secured two mica mines for Utica investors and three gold mines in Davie Buncombe and Mitchell counties are reported. A syndicate led by Cyrus W Field backs one of the mines. Overall about 1 million dollars has been invested in hunter tobacco and agricultural regions of the state.
Trade notes report iron trade in Pittsburgh showing over 200 tons per day more output than two months ago. Thirteen principal mills operate at double shifts. four mills idle. Plate and bar mill at Fifteenth Street and ten paddling furnaces at the Allegheny mill are idled. other departments to resume after wage-order change. New York reports 215 failures in the week ending October 10, per Bredstreet's, versus 165 last week and prior year figures. In Boston on October 11, Ferdinand A. Wyman, trustee for Shaw Brothers, filed a supplementary account showing a balance of 703,084.90 with 314,976.66 received and 469,359.23 paid out since May 31, 1884, leaving 552,622.39.
A letter from Leonard K Moore recounts the captivation and brutal treatment of eight of twenty eight crew members of the British steamer Nizero by the Rajah of Tenom after grounding off Sumatra on November 18, 1883. The letter notes a cipher and fear of massacre if guns are fired, while discussions among Singaporean and Dutch forces delay action for ransom release.

A telegraph of October 11 reports Charles W. Butler a Pierceton wife murderer hanged yesterday in the jail yard after a noted performance on an accordion he died in the Catholic faith thanking the jury that convicted him and there is no appeal in territorial criminal cases.
