James F Brady of Cook's Tourist Agency in London is tasked with verifying reports that Dr Arthur Preller was murdered and his body hidden in a trunk to claim a 30000 life policy. Suspicion grows as London reports say Maxwell tried to buy a body in Boston and the Preller family shows urgency to settle the loss. Lamy in New York says there is no basis to doubt Preller's death and attributes concern to insurers' desire to confirm death before paying.
Curacao June 23 A plain strong box addressed to General A. S. Grant in Mt McCuegor N Y was sent east by special messenger on the Michigan Central Express. The box held a liquid extract of raw beef not yet on the market and used by Grant without his physicians knowledge for about two months. A letter from Colonel Fred Grant says the preparation was the General’s principal food and requests regular supplies. A former official notes the doctors were cautious and one bottle was used at a time. Newark June 23 At Turner meeting a long jump of nineteen feet five inches and a high jump of five feet six inches were recorded by Henry Lrytanze. Charles Kammerer climbed forty eight feet of rope hand over hand. Oertel of Philadelphia did forty feet six inches in a hop step and jump. On Sunday 16 000 tickets were sold and 20 000 visitors attended. Several minor accidents occurred including John Burbank’s heart death and Max Sachs suffering a spine injury from a fall.
Pirrssunen June 23 The Riddle Reiber conspiracy trial resumes after character witnesses. Defense rests as directors deny claims by Riddle Bealle and McMifin. Cross examination reveals two Laughlin telegrams from New Orleans about matters for him and bank affairs. Directors recall Riddle spoke of a syndicate but said the bank would only be interested in the exchange. Case expected to proceed in two days. Three laborers killed by construction train near Christiana on the North Bend Railroad curve as a westbound freight car overruns workers waiting on track.
John Konitz Commander in Chief G A R and staff reach Portland on a heavy train. Delegations from Ohio and Ontario greet them at United States Hotel before a levee and breakfast. Rain dampens decorations as veterans pour in, with 20 000 veterans and as many strangers expected.
