Statue of The Pilgrim Presented by New England Society
The Pilgrim statue in Central Park was presented to New York by the New England Society on Saturday. George William Curtis delivered the oration. The bronze figure stands nine feet tall on a seven foot eleven inch pedestal costing about 20,000. The attire is historically accurate with a leather jerkin over a tunic, ribbed hose, breeches, square boots, and a cartridge belt. The pedestal is Quincy granite, six feet two inches square and weighs 15 tons, with bronze reliefs on each side. The American Institute moved to Clinton Hall at Astor Place and Eighth Street, marking 25 years in its former Cooper Union offices. A celebration display of strawberries and orchids is planned for June 18 and 19 with substantial premiums.
