Crowds fill Newburyport City Hall for a 250th anniversary event marking the town as the seventh oldest in Massachusetts. Samuel Colcord Bartlett of Dartmouth delivers the day’s oration while the address highlights Newburyport’s early industries and firsts, including a woolen mill and nail factory, followed by a feast for more than 1,000 on March’s Hill.
Fire outbreaks reported in three cities on June 11 across New York New Orleans and Manistee. In New York a seven story building on Franklin Street burned from basement to roof, with losses estimated at fifty thousand dollars. In New Orleans a Canal Street store and an adjoining dry goods building were destroyed, with gasping firemen injured and total losses around one hundred thousand dollars. Manistee Michigan suffered the destruction of Kitzinger's shingle mill with logs valued at twenty thousand dollars. Reports also mention a lynching investigation in Lynchburg Virginia and a separate confession in Carr Town Ohio related to a mother’s death.
San Axtown June 10 Doc Har fla notorious gang leader in Western Texas was captured by Captain Smith of the State Rangers and surrendered to the county sheriff. He faced thirteen indictments totaling about 900 years, and was preparing to ship fifty head of stolen horses to Kansas City. Crockett County ranchers have declared open war on the gang, with a 50-man posse from Valverde County heading to Crockett County amid expected clashes.
New York June 11 The Sun reports General Grant and his publishers were surprised by extracts from the forthcoming memoirs. They suspect a canvasser sold sample contents without permission. The book will be larger than first planned and is said to have helped keep him alive. The Sun notes his grave illness and severe swelling under the ear with emaciated form and choking fits, yet says he bears up heroically.
The Boston House of Representatives fought over a new Police system bill, ending in a 314 to 96 vote despite turbulent sessions and a mass exit by opponents. Separately, Charles A. Boyd, a defaulter and forger, was sentenced to four years hard labor for forgeries totaling about eight thousand dollars. A severe storm in Dakota reports extreme conditions with a steamer captain noting a deadly Friday storm, cattle losses, and destroyed shanties.
Ortawa Ontario June 10 The Peerless boat valued at 50000 was driven from its moorings in a drifting incident. A party of ten people aboard was reported unharmed. June 11 Helena Montana. Public notices advertise in the newspaper.

States report mixed yields with declines in winter wheat yet spring wheat near 353 million bushels.
