New York reports health officials acting over impure well water in soda fountains. Dr E H Lartley notes lead and copper from pipes contaminate water after standing and with acid syrups. Health Commissioner Reymond to ban storage of syrup in anything but glass and remove exposed fittings.
A string of bank and business failures spans New York Newark Island and other towns. Fisk Hatch bankers probe Dodd ledgers over a $2,000,000 U S bond deposit with no security. Fletcher & Sharpe suspend, assigning William Wallace named assignee. L B Buford Co heavy plow firm assigns with $500,000 liabilities. Durgert Slart wholesale boat and shoe house assigns. Wilder Son furniture firm suspends. Clayatt Starvey general store assigns. Gibbs grocer Gass assigns. Leisse cigar box maker assigns. J P Pet Catholic publishers appoint receiver. Cassidy crockery firm seeks extension after prior collapse.
Cleveland July 16. Charles Salisbury a helper for Treat the hoist mover was killed when a derrick broke and fell at Globe Iron Works Old River Street above the waste works pumping station. He was about forty, survived by a widow and three children. Up river town reports of lightning rod swindles near Suelyville, a New York suspect nabbed for goods fraud, a violent Black festival incident near Cuamtorre NC left several injured, and author Miss P Lincoln Phelps died at age ninety one.
In Washington on July 15 Secretary Hughuysen ordered consular officers in London, Liverpool, Marseilles, Havre, Bordeaux, Peamen and Hamburg to appoint physicians for departing ships and to deny clean bills of health unless a sanitary inspector recommends them. Consuls must report any contagious disease aboard. Printing of small denomination greenbacks to resume soon, one-dollar notes in thirty days, two-dollar notes if funds permit. The postal convention with Mexico faces delays due to Mexican amendments and Postoffice review.
On July 16 Judge Medard refused to grant the injunction sought by Jamestown and Franklin Railroad stockholders to block a lease renewal to Lake Shore. The court found Lake Shore already holds the lease, injunction would delay only the hearing, and plaintiffs lack operating capability. Case now with the Master. Lake Shore hopes to renew due to the Oil City branch’s value.
Trenton July 15 The Court of Errors rules in the Hobart case that Treasurer Dunnell is liable for Newark First National Bank losses with knowledge and assistance, though the actions were directed for profit by the cash ledger.
San Jose small town mission nearly destroyed by fire last night with losses around 50 000 dollars. Water ran out and claret was employed to extinguish flames preventing damage to the old mission church. Also noted Bowdoin College acting President Professor Packard died suddenly aged eighty five in Bowdoin College chapter.
A July cyclone and fierce hail tore through Joffarson township in Foweshiek County, destroying nine barns five houses and one school, injuring residents including Mr Dixon and a woman struck by lightning. Hail lay a foot deep, windows shattered, and crops across Tama and Iowa counties ruined. crews report widespread destitution and near ruin. Elsewhere a wind storm hit Ruthven and Pocahontas with damaged homes and downed telegraph lines. In New York farmers push for standard four barrel apple barrels, warning of potential trouble at market. A cryptic letter relates to an Irish Legion officer Adelman case with a death penalty for noncompliance.
Beruinatox Vermont July 15 three men Jerry Petrande aged sixty and his son Frank aged nineteen were instantly killed at Catlin's stone quarry when a keg of powder exploded. Joseph Mascotte fatally injured, dragged shot and robbed. Fire and detail describe the blast and aftermath with casualties and local reactions.
