License Granted for Mrs. Mary A Miller as Mississippi River Steamboat Master

In Wasuineres on January 22 a petition for a steamboat master license for Mrs. Mary A Miller, wife of the boat’s owner, was reviewed. The Treasury Solicitor found no legal objection since the law is silent, and the case proceeds toward grant. The license would mark a historic precedent with the captaincy held by a woman. The Mexican treaty moves to secret session after Senate action on Van Wyck resolution. The President announced several appointments including William Christy Wilson, Horace Austin, and Isaac A Gavin, with multiple confirmations by the Senate for receivers, surveyors, and land office officials. Attack on Belmont County jailer ends in assault

Jailer W S Colby was beaten and robbed by ten prisoners in the Belmont County jail at St Clairsville Ohio. A boy in a cell raised an alarm. prisoners fled via a skylight but were captured. Colby was found insensible with serious injuries and revived. extent unknown.
