Bargains abound at the Evie Store offering discounts on underwear hosiery gloves and bridal and mourning bonnets. Shoppers are urged to visit the Monroe Block shop before buying elsewhere Enz Store.
Samuel J Randall and party arrived by train at eight o'clock with a citizen escort from Louisville. General William Jackson welcomed him at the depot. The group toured Maxwell House for breakfast then visited Mrs. James K. Polk at Vine Street. A public reception at the Maxwell House ran from two to four p.m. with many citizens paying respects.
The Dominion reports Archbishop Bourget of Montreal is near death following last rites administered by Bishop Fabre. He is the oldest American bishop famed for opposing Guibord's burial. Also noted are mill closures, suicides, and business failures across North America, including Ogilvie & Co. shutting Winnipeg flour mills and other late December notices.
New York officials and financiers discuss General Grant's finances amid claims by Vanderbilt and others. Cyrus W Field says rumors of a large deficit are unfounded. Elkins expects a fund for Grant. Morgan estate guarantees returns from Wabash stock, with principal and interest preserved. Grant’s supporters await word from Sherman as local wealth backs the aid effort.
The December cotton report shows a smaller yield than October projections with an aggregate 5,180,000 bales forecast, mainly from western states. The Navy orders discharge all employees paid under six months’ appropriation, except essential staff, and the inauguration committee proposes General Hancock as Grand Marshal.
A roundup of December 31 fires and disasters reports losses across several towns including Pierre Dakota and New York City. Fire destroyed blocks in Pierre with losses around 113000 and 75000 elsewhere. Other notices include factory and pump works damaged, a New York Military Academy fire, and legal news on contempt.

In Cincinnati on December 1 Judge Sage sentenced several inmates for election law violations. Robert Berry James Usher and James McLaughlin got six months. D Shannon and Ferdinand Noth sixty days. Henry Shaeffer and David Kinney eight months for hindering voting.
