Fire destroys several dry goods stores in Washington

A blaze in the dry goods store of Johm Voght Thursday evening rapidly spread to adjacent shops causing total losses estimated at 75 000 with 40 000 insurance. In Boston a fertilizer firm on the Carolina Central Railroad suffered 30 000 in losses with no insurance and will rebuild at once. A Dorchester man died after self administering laudanum and chloroform. Farther south a killing occurred near the Fayette and Woodford line as a farmer’s son shot another man at a family gathering. An organizing firm in New York failed while efforts to supply warm meals to large families collapse.

Oil Tank Explodes Wrecks Depot and Burns Freight Cars

A 35 000 barrel oil tank at West Junction five miles west of Ecaina exploded with a deafening roar. Buildings near the tank were wrecked and the Delaware Lackawanna & Western depot 1 000 feet away was damaged. A house 250 feet away was wrecked but the occupants escaped unharmed. Several cars awaiting loading burned and the Northern Central Railway tracks were warped by burning oil. A second tank nearby melted and its contents burned. No serious injuries reported.
