On December 20 County Commissioners from Wilmot were sworn in and bonds of elected officers approved before they moved offices to Wilmot. Gang Raid in Clayton Leads to Multiple Arrests
On Thanksgiving night two Black men robbed a Clayton store and were detected on a return visit, a fight ensued and George Cabell was killed. Days later another nearby store was robbed. Five men were arrested, with State witnesses linking a larger gang of twenty white and colored men to robberies statewide. The initial five arrests were not tied to the crimes. Numerous warrants followed these confessions.
