Abandoned Baby Brought to Owingsville Home

A baby left at Enoch Vice’s in Owingsville was brought to Mrs. Young’s home. The child, named Stoddard Johnston Young, drew a local crowd and sparked speculation about its parents. Shelby Carpenter, a farmer near Owingsville, identified the child after a stranger arrived with matching clothes. The story recounts a couple, Henry Candher and a Jefferson County woman named Linty Evans, who traveled to the area with the infant, and details the wife’s devoted care before leaving with the baby. The man claims to have left the child in Bascom’s mills area with Mr Carpenter to care for the pair. The note ends with a plea for the mother to contact and visit if desired.

Dazed by a Letter in Brooklyn Goat Case at Court

A Brooklyn judge battles bizarre notes as a goat dispute erupts in court. The letter recounts a goat claimed by two, with family ties and messy accusations amid a spectacle that leaves Justice Courtney perplexed and the audience amused. The testimony centers on ownership, theft, and the goat's fate, with insinuations of impropriety and local gossip surrounding Billie Simpson and family relations. The fragmentary readouts highlight muddled confessions, drunkenness, and a chaotic scene in the Brooklyn City Hall courtroom.

Bogus Butter Branded Adulteration Report Issued

A New York Senate Committee on Public Health reports widespread adulteration of dairy products, with oleomargarine’s rise and bogus butter sold in saloons and hotels. Only ten of thirty butter samples were genuine, prices show real butter at about forty to forty five cents per pound while oleomargarine sells for a third of that. New York and Brooklyn centers of vast oleomargarine manufacture, with losses estimated at five to ten million dollars yearly. The report calls for prohibition of all butter adulteration, notes milk quality issues with skim milk making up about 200,000 quarts of 590,000 daily in 1882, and recommends a state milk inspector and dairy‑interested officials to enforce laws.
