Baby Jones Hanged After Murder Conviction in Pitt County
On April 4 in Pittstown, George alias Baby Jones, a colored boy, was hanged in the County Jail yard for the murder of John Foster, another colored man. He slept poorly, dressed in a new suit, and in a final moment whispered no last words. Ward conducted the execution with a cap placed and the trap released at around 10 o'clock. Jones died by strangulation. his body was later buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. Foster had lingered three months after being shot in the back on Wood and Water streets. Jones had fled to Erie, Pa., before being recaptured. Coroners implicated Jesse Carter and John Hushus. Hushus was acquitted, White was an accessory and later respited. Separate reports from Atlanta, Brunt Dak, and Austin note related crimes, bribery suits, and land disputes arising from state investigations and political tensions.
