Marshall County TB Testing Expands in South Dakota

Pierre Sept 14. Marshall county joins five South Dakota counties as accredited tubercu­losis free areas with the first general cattle test under way this month. Dr Ruth Fluth notes testing will be done by state and federal animal industry divisions. Previous accredited counties Brown Clark Godington Framlin and Miner reported August testing with 6 reactors among 1,196 herds and 4,842 head in individual herd tests. Total cattle under supervision reached 358,279 in 3,626 herds. Premiums for swine from accredited areas listed for May through July at Sioux City and state markets.

Menno Steers Lead Sioux City Market Sale

In Sioux City Iowa the Menno shipping firm headed by Fred Hender led the market with steers averaging about 1,030 pounds selling at 316.25 per hundredweight. Bender of Menno also sold mixed cattle including nine loads of heifers at 142.50 and steers at 15.25.

Turkey Raising Grows In Black Hills Area

Sturgis South Dakota Sept 74 The sale of FLAGO turkey eggs this season was led by George Boyston of Star He now has a flock of 250 turkeys aboard the Mammoth Htonzera and plans to sell more eggs. Rey Walenta a rancher near Thunder Butte has a flock of 1500 turkeys and employs a herder to tend birds by day and bring them home at night. The birds feed mainly on insects and grass seed and Walenta plans to fatten them with grain later this season.

Herd Scores High In Britton Dairy Test

Marshall County Dairy Herd Improvement records show the high herd averaged 320 pounds of butterfat per year while the low herd produced 183 pounds. The difference is 136 pounds, about 62 dollars per cow over the year.
