Lumber demand exceeds supply in South Dakota
Pierre Oct 20 Frank D Kriebs state secretary of agriculture urged a comprehensive tree planting campaign as demand for lumber in South Dakota and the nation far exceeds supply. He cited forest devastation, noting original forests covered 22 000 000 acres two thirds, 548 000 000 acres, have been cut or destroyed by fire. About 26 000 000 000 cubic feet of timber is cut annually while replacement runs at six billion feet. He urged corn belt states especially South Mikotu to establish corn stalk paper mills turning farm waste into profits for farmers.

Forest conservation urged as nation faces timber decline
Kriebs warned that 2.3 million acres supply magazines and newspapers with paper annually while two-thirds of wood pulp now comes from Canada. He noted the US forest area at about 470 million acres and estimated that if forests produced at the current ratio we would meet only half of lumber needs. Reforestation would take fifty years. He urged planting more trees, citing 59 million seedlings from 38 state nurseries versus Germany and Japan’s far larger plantings.
