Winter Road Prep Urged by Spink County Official

Redfield Oct 3 7 Special Warnings issued by Reese Howell Spink county highway superintendent to county road patrolmen and township maintainers to prepare highways and roads before freezing weather. He urged weed and grass removal from shoulders to ease snow removal and asked land owners to burn weeds along fences and ditches. Culverts should drain well and roads be smooth with no holes in the center to avoid delaying snowplows. Cooperation from patrolmen and maintainers would aid the county snowplow crew this winter.

Mellette October 30 Special The Abby Gardner Sharp Girl reserve plans a candle lighting service Friday evening. New members will carry white candles while older members carry colored candies. Several new members will be initiated at the meeting.

Copies Of Movie Dakeetah On Road In South Dakota

Copies of the historical motion picture Dakeetah have been completed and placed on the road in South Dakota. Minor additions and corrections were made from the original version and prairie file scenes were colored for effect. Written and acted by Eastern College students, the film will tour every county in the state over the coming months and join the state archives.

Hot Springs to Have Two Skating Rinks This Winter

Hot Springs will host two skating rinks and a hockey team after a report from Julian Staven to the chamber of commerce. Plans call for a public celebration next spring to mark Wind Cave Beaver Creek dam completion and road graveling projects from Wind Cave to Custer via Pringle and Norbeck cut‑off to Mt. Hired Man Scalp Injured by Threshing Pulley

At the WW Piper farm near Castlewood an unnamed hired man named Groak suffered a severe scalp injury while threshing. His hair became entangled in a pulley of a separatory, tearing away part of his hair and scalp before the machine could be stopped. He was transported to Castlewood for medical care.

Niederaur Rites To Be Held Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Niederaur will be held Saturday morning at All Saints church with burial in Calvary cemetery. Born in Minnesota in 1882 she spent most of life in Mallette area. She served as past president of the local American Legion Auxiliary and Ladies Aid Society, past Oracle of the Royal Neighbors, and was on the Mellette school board and Women's Relief and Red Cross. She had been ill for years. survived by husband, several brothers and sisters. Relatives are expected.

Test Fields Of Corn Show 75 Bushel Yield

A 100 acre Union county corn contest sponsored by the Farm Bureau, conducted by county agent Elmer Lund, reported yields from 0.50 to 75 bushels per acre. Ten entries compete with prizes for best showing. judging will occur later after 40 days of drying and shrinkage assessment of 20 pound samples from each plot.

In Pierre on October 36, T. O. Ronaghe director of inspections for the state department of agriculture urged South Dakota farmers to view rabbits as a supplemental income source. He noted rising demand for rabbit fur due to declines in fur bearing animals and cited USDA figures showing 100 million skins used annually with about 98 percent imported, while stressing safe handling to prevent disease.

BROOKINGS Oct 30 Ivan C Johnson of Geddes is elected president of the Miltonian Society at South Dakota State College. Johnson, a junior in speech, assists in the college Speech department. The Miltonian group is one of the college clubs active on campus.

Corn Yielding 55 Bushels Is Reported

Fulton reports a strong corn harvest from Arnun Blumenberg’s Fulton area farm on the west. Yields average easily 55 bushels per acre by wagon measure as harvest crews use a picker and wagons to move corn, with ears measuring about 11 inches. Many farmers have large piles already, and the picker with the elevator reduces hard work.
