SIOUX FALLS Oct 13 Frank Mitchell a carnival employee accused of violating the Mann act in transporting Wilma Melven Huron to Texas was brought here today from Texarkana to face federal court action. He allegedly met them at Huron during the state fair and took Melven to Texas where he was apprehended about three weeks ago.
John L. Lewis was reelected president of the CIO by acclamation amid a raucous 32 minute meeting. The decision extended his leadership and affirmed ongoing policy direction within the organization.
Washington reports Vice President Garner is pressing for a compromise on the shipping provisions of the neutrality bill to speed its passage. Senators Johnson White Bailey proposed amendments to ease the arms embargo, while Nye urged remodelling to retain the embargo with safeguards. Senator Taft backed repeal. Students abandon classes as alumni parents and friends flood Huron College for two days of Pow Wow celebrations. No classes today to allow floats for the parade and campus groups to prepare. President M C Towner hails the event as a milestone reflecting the college’s fifty year tradition and a standout in South Dakota education.
In Sioux Falls South Dakota the 55th annual Dakota Methodist conference elected four delegates to the 1940 general conference in Atlantic City to represent pastors. Dr Frank E Lochridge Mitchell and Dr Fred E Morrison Huron were chosen as pastors delegates while Prof W A Knox Sioux Falls College and Prof S A Dunbar State College Brookings were named lay delegates. The action began a historic move dissolving the Dakota Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Indian student at Huron College with Stanford Blacksmith secured genuine costumes for 1939 Pow Wow events. Miss Macel Eggleston Pow Wow princess will wear leather robes with fringe beaded floral designs and handmade bead work. Kenneth Knapp Chief Warrior will wear a beaded pattern on arms and shoulders crafted by South Dakota tribe Indians. Long feathered headdresses accompany the robes.
Paris reports a 30,000 strong British buildup on the Northeast Front signaling either an early Franco British offensive or a planned large scale assault on Allied positions. French forces resumed stabbing at the German line after five days of defense as German attacks along the 100 mile Moselle to Rhine front were repulsed. There are 158,000 British soldiers in France with more expected, munitions stockpiles grow, tanks are hidden, and camouflaged planes await battle while patrols near Warndt were repulsed.
Vatican City announced the cancellation of the International Eucharistic Congress planned for Nice France next spring due to the European war. The decision was issued today by church authorities in response to ongoing hostilities.
Stockholm reported Sweden Denmark Norway and the United States pressed Russia to avoid demands that would risk Finnish Russian relations. Finland’s talks with Soviet leaders in Moscow continued as Helsinki ordered civilians to be ready for non military emergency aid.
A Washington dispatch reports Nazi sources say Germany is through with Chamberlain and Daladier as they await a neutral response to Hitler's Reichstag address. Berlin indicates a possible lull in the West if neutrals act, while Washington notes no formal mediation request has been made by Germany.
