Chalk Deposits Found In State

Vermillion October 5 South Dakota is one of the few states with chalk according to state geologist E P Rothrock at the University of South Dakota. Chalk could be quarried locally and exported to central U S markets, with rail transport offering lower costs than ocean shipments. Regions around Yankton Chamberlain Mitchell Scotland Springfield and Menno are noted for surface chalk deposits.
