Tourist travel starts increase at Custer Battlefield Highway

Warm weather brings more visitors to the Custer Battlefield Highway area as tourists from Illinois Maine Iowa California Pennsylvania Minnesota Nebraska Montana North Dakota and Canada arrive. Agricultural students from Iowa State College Ames will visit the Black Hills while Wanderlust Traveling Camp travels through to Yellowstone and beyond. California automobile group requests 30 road reports weekly and Yellowstone Park information bureau asks for 2 400 maps. overall Custer Highway expected to rise at least 25 percent this year due to new eastern and southern bureaus and wider reach to Louisville Portland and Calgary.

Farmer Olaf Anderson Profits Highlight Potter County Farm

GETTYSBURG May 28 There are profits to be made in farming if the accountancy methods of Olaf Anderson owner of a section of Potter County land are accurate. Mr Anderson finds that last year he made 1739 after first allowing for a day rate of 35 to himself depreciation on machinery interest on his investment help and other items. On his farm included wheat corn alalla barley and oats with a part reserved for pasture.

Alfalfa Ready for Mowing by June 1

A heavy alfalfa crop is expected to be ready for mowing by June 1. Acreage this year has more than doubled due to moisture in the soil aiding crop start. Much of the crop was sown on new broken ground with flax as a morse crop. Wild pastures are in good condition.

Sioux Falls officials approved a permit for Kresge and company to construct two store buildings at Phillips avenue and Poinsett street. The permit includes a provision requiring compliance with a new building ordinance governing steel skeleton structures and updating the city building code.

S. D. Educator To Talk At N.EVA Meet

SPRINGFIELD May 28 President C G Lawrence of the Southern State normal school received an invitation from President Lamkin of the National Education association to be a special Sunday speaker at the July summer convention in Atlanta Georgia. Lamkin plans educator speakers for churches across Atlanta and nearby cities to present a new southern view on northern education.

New Degrees To Be Given At University

SVERMILLION May 28 The first bachelor of science degrees in business administration will be given by the new school of business and commerce at the University of South Dakota in the 47th commencement exercises June 10. Nine of the 168 graduates are expected to receive the new title. The school will award degrees to 14 students. Two students are expected to receive the master of arts degree in commerce, while three will be awarded the bachelor of arts in economics.

Four Dvorak family killed in local freight collision

The Dvorak parents and two daughters aged 2 and 4 died after their car was hit by a freight train backing across the main street crossing in Scotland. A six month old baby survived with bruises. The inquest was postponed to Wednesday at 10 am and a funeral is planned for today.

Commencement Season Opens at Northern State Teachers College

May 28 Aberdeen reports the commencement season begins with a three day spring festival. The opening events include a dramatic presentation of Hawatha's Wedding Feast and a concert by the college symphony orchestra featuring guest violinist HM ury Schiesser from Glasgow Montana and Lorainne Dodge from Minneapolis. Concerts by the glee clubs and chorus follow later this week.

May 28 Vermillion reports Herman James named president of the University of South Dakota with twelve new faculty joining next fall. Appointments include Herman Trachsel as government head, William Guevara as Spanish instructor, and two economists Claude Whitlow and Loyd Deval. Other posts cover medicine, law, music, home economics, physical education, and university high school staff. A full time secretary role is created for the president, with Ruth West and Margaret Hedlin appointed to key positions. Conde reports temple remodeling and redecoration underway.

In Sioux Falls on May 28 a meeting of the South Dakota state committee on the relation of electricity to agriculture will discuss uses of electrical current for farm power and lighting. A Brookings state college committee and many farmers from the state and western Minnesota will attend. Charles H. Ten Marketing Meetings Planned In June in South Dakota

In South Dakota ten conferences on grain marketing are set for June 4 to June 18 across Mitchell Gregory Philin Onida Mobridge Aberdeen Sisseton Watertown Redfield and Wer en. W P Schnidt of the State college extension service announced the schedule with a later series planned for the southeast. John Bohn federal grain supervisor at Sioux City or another Federal Inspection Service representative will lead demonstrations.

Gypsies Bothering Yankton Police

A large band of Gypsies traveling in several cars camps near Yankton for days. Police watch their activities and warn members but make no arrests. Leaders say this is a northwest rendezvous before moving to Oklahoma City for a tribal convention. They are camped on the Jim River east of Yankton.
