Medical students upset respected theories in heart research

Vermillion May 24 William Sweener and Bernard Parker, University of South Dakota medical students, reveal that alcohol, strychnine and camphor are heart depressants not stimulants, while chloroform proves far more poisonous than ether. Under Prof. H V Atkinson they perfused mammalian hearts for over six hours, achieving sustained beating and exploring drug effects with a novel perfusion fluid. The work marks a notable advance in technique and understanding of heart action.
