Dakota Wesleyan Plans Exercises

Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell holds final activities for 62 seniors this weekend. The Junior-Senior banquet Saturday night leads into a Sunday breakfast at the Edge home and a Sunday afternoon walk at the Lmith residence. The baccalaureate is June 2 delivered by President Joseph H. Edge, with commencement exercises at 10:00 the following Tuesday. Dr. Lyman Fort of Sioux Falls is the commencement speaker. Lake Preston high school opened senior activities with the Little Women production. In Wellington on May 24 Mrs Elma Brown led the Ladies Aid session assisted by Edna. Lunch duties were assigned to Mrs John Meyer Mrs Del Fisher and Mrs Frank Thompson for the June 12 meeting at Mrs Brown’s home. The June divisional gathering will be hosted by Mrs Warren Biegler with Mrs Clyde Willard assisting. Birth rate in U S drops slightly in 1939 census

The census bureau reports 2,209,726 births last year at a rate of 17.4 per thousand, same as 1938. State figures show New Mexico highest at 392.7 and New Jersey lowest at 13.0, with Minnesota Montana North Dakota and others listed for 1939 and 1958.

Plots Established To Test Corn Varieties

State College seed program sets up special test plots with up to twenty four corn varieties on farms in Letcher Woonsocket Cuthbert and Vincent. Brookings college staff helped plant the Vincent plot. observations and yield checks will occur this summer and next fall.

Graduation Exercises Held At Blunt School

Graduation exercises were held in the Blunt School auditorium with eleven high school graduates and eight from the eighth grade. The processional was played by Mrs. Harold Munson, Gilbert Shore led the seniors as junior class president, and Rev. Randall Barnes delivered the invocation. Le Roy Miller announced the salutatorian, Dorothy Westhind gave the valedictory, Marvin Kemp, Faulkton school superintendent, gave the commencement address, a mixed chorus directed by Kennett Malgaard performed two numbers with Helen Smith on piano, and awards for attendance, athletics, music and typing were presented before the benediction.

Band Concerts To Be Continued At Miller

The city and Miller schools will sponsor a summer music program directed by G R Shaw. Practices run 9 to 10 Monday through Thursday with Tuesday evening concerts. The junior band moves up to B band. the symphony band meets 11 25 to 12 Monday and Wednesday. All sessions in the fire hall for the first two weeks.

Class Night Program at Somet School De Smet May 22

Senior class program presented Tuesday night in the auditorium featured remarks by class president William Coughlin and class history by Mary Jane Liggett. Orin Purinton sang, Junior Hauffle gave a prophecy, Alden Larson led class varieties, Dorothy Johnson led the girls sextet with Red Letter Days, James Stewart read the class poem, Clifford Walstrom performed a solo, and scholarships were presented by P A Anderson.

Sioux City to Get Barge Service in 60 Days

George R. Call, president of the Sioux City and New Orleans Barge Line, Inc., predicts regular barge transportation to Missouri River points as far north as Sioux City within 60 days. The company has signed a contract to build the first tow boat at Blair Nebraska Boat Works, with delivery in six weeks and floating equipment to follow from Louisville. Operations are expected to begin before August 1.

Pot Luck Party Ends Successful Club Year

The Fortnightly Club closed a successful year with a potluck at Mrs. Charles Huddleston’s home. Hostess Mrs Delbert Major oversaw the gathering honoring Mrs Howard Selvig who leaves for Pierre. Prizes were awarded in a bridge game and guests from Wayland attended.

Wayland on May 24 Mrs L J Borkhuis entertained Delta Delt Bridge Club members at her home Wednesday afternoon. Three tables of cards were played. WPA to Build Hall at Ree Heights

Plans advance for a WPA project hall at Ree Heights to replace a fire destroyed building. A fifty by eighty foot auditorium with a twenty foot ceiling, basketball court and stage will serve both Ree Heights High School and town. Work starts after final approval and should be enclosed before cold weather.

Miller May 24 Special Grasshopper bait station opens at the same site as last year. Hours run from morning to noon and 1 to 6 in the afternoon with a five cent bag and five cent bait charge. Bags may be exchanged. Grasshoppers noted around field edges.

Conscience Money Sent to Homestake Mining Company

A Chicago man identified as A B Smith sent a $40 postoffice money order to Homestake Mining Company with a note saying the money was conscience money. William Frackleton reports the firm has seen similar payments before but never such a large amount. The letter attached explained the funds were to ease the giver's conscience, though the specific act prompting the payment remains unknown.

Population Decline In Harding County Census Shows Drop

Harding County's population fell by about 19 percent in the last decade. 1949 preliminary figures show 2,997 residents, down from 3,589 in 1930. The number of farms dropped from 739 in 1935 to 489 by April 1.

De Smet Musicians Earn High Ratings at Contest

Shirley Van Tassell, a De Smet junior, won a class two contralto solo rating at the national music contest in St. Paul, adding to a string of strong showings since freshman year. Fellow student Norma Johnson, a freshman, earned a class three rating in piano. Accompanying chaperones included Mrs. Glenn Van Tassall, Vivian Van Tassell, and Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Johnson.

300 Acres Granted Mount Rushmore Memorial Land

President Roosevelt signed a bill adding 300 acres to the Mount Rushmore Memorial in South Dakota. The land increases the memorial to 1,800 acres and will transfer from Forest Service control to the memorial to shield it from undesirable commercial development.

Government of Norway Honors Bushfield

Presentation of St. Olaf medals, a high honor from the Norwegian government, will be made to Gov. Harlan J. Bushfield and lawyer John T. McKee of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls today. W.O. Monserud, Norway’s vice counsel, will present the awards for King Haakon, honoring kindness shown to Crown Prince Olaf and Princess Martha during their visit to Sioux Falls last June.
