South Dakota Prepares Summer Vacation for Pupils

Pierre May 24. Over the next two weeks the last of nearly 350000 South Dakota school pupils will gain a three month summer break. By June 2 officials say 104785 grade pupils and 37729 high school pupils will be released. About 11000 teachers plan summer school to gain advanced training and 1090 grade and 690 high school pupils are expected to receive diplomas.

Alcohol Fueled Cars Could Boost Grain Demand

Senate finance subcommittee heard testimony that a ten percent alcohol blend in US motor fuels would create demand for about 1 billion additional bushels of grain annually and raise gross farm income by roughly 800 million dollars. Carl H. Wilken of Sioux City and William W. Buttum of New York supported exempting fuels with 7 percent or more alcohol from the federal gasoline tax.

Yale High School Seniors Receive Diplomas in Muself Hall

Yale High School held commencement exercises in Muself Hall on Friday evening. 11 seniors were awarded diplomas with T A Luby of Huron giving the main address on What is Education. Floyd Porter gave the salutatory and Merle Gribble the valedictory. John K Hofer presented the diplomas. Degree recipients were Edna Walter, Mary V Davis, Floyd Porter, Leon Vondracek, James Smith, Merle Gribble, Alveria Iverson, Joe Davis, Verne Lindquist, Bernard Leintenberg and Edward O Keefe.

Poppy Day at Miller Set for May 27

Mrs Elmer Danburg president of Frand County American Legion Auxiliary announces Poppy Day to aid disabled veterans and dependent families. Local participation led by Mrs Clark Drisy with a large committee, volunteers will offer poppies on streets all day Saturday May 27 for welfare relief efforts.

Miller High School announces summer band schedule

Glen R Shaw announces summer music program starting May 23 after dismissal and running to August. Regular band meets Monday to Thursday 10 11 AM, beginners 11 AM to noon, orchestra Monday and Wednesday 9 to 10. Thursday evening concerts begin at six on the auditorium lawn starting in June.

Kate Dean Honored On 48th Birthday In Miller

Kate Dean pioneer settler of Hand County and longtime Miller resident marked her 48th birthday last Saturday. Presbyterian Ladies' Aid members showered her with gifts and friends stopped by to offer best wishes. She is the church's remaining charter member in Miller. Charles Dwight, longtime Gettysburg grocer and meat market operator, plans to move to Spearfish to open an I. G. A. store and meat market. He aims to be ready for business by June 15 while continuing to operate in Gettysburg.

Visiting Relatives Cavour to California for Fair

Mrs. Andrew Kleingaster of Parker and Mr Klein gaster visit relatives in Richland and Yale communities. They plan to start Saturday for California to visit relatives and attend the San Francisco World's Fair. He also expects to attend summer school on the west coast.

Former Hughes County resident returns to Blunt visit

Mrs. Edna Reddick of Hot Springs Arkansas arrived in Blunt to visit her daughter Mrs. George Wiedenman. She was taken to Ft. Pierre to see her son Leon Reddick. Reddick a Hughes County pioneer formerly lived near Canning and will spend several weeks renewing acquaintances and visiting relatives.

Fuller heads to Iowa City for book firm position

Fuller left Sunday for Iowa City where he has accepted a position with a book concern and expects to be employed during the vacation months. The May 24 item notes further that the Hitchcock Band Association will meet in regular session.

Bancroft High School awarded diplomas to fourteen seniors at a commencement held in Community Hall. Dr. R. K. Compton of South Dakota State College gave the main address on Individual Competition Number 1. Eighth graders also received diplomas. seniors were announced by R. K. Olmsted and diplomas presented by Supt. M. M. Finley.
