Royal quintuplets meet King and Queen during rail journey

King George and Queen Elizabeth greeted the Dionne quintuplets aboard a royal train en route to Winnipeg. The five girls, dressed in organdy and bonnets, impressed the royals, while the quints’ family and staff admitted they were tired after yesterday’s Toronto meeting and travel.

Escaping Negroes Slain By Trusties Near Cummins Prison

Two black convicts who escaped with others during a windstorm were shot dead by trusted guards in a hand to hand fight between Cummins State Prison Farm and Gould Arkansas. Freight wreck kills 13 near Cernauti in mountain crash

A freight train out of control rammed a passenger train near Cernauti causing 13 deaths and over sixty injuries. The incident occurred as heavily loaded cars ran down a mountain, leaving wreckage and emergency crews at the scene.

Briggs Manufacturing Strike Halts Auto Production Across Plants

Detroit May 23 Approximately 65 000 auto workers were thrown into idleness as a Briggs Manufacturing strike shut down seven plants. Chrysler announced shutdowns of 10 plants in Detroit Newcastle Ind and Kokomo Ind with only Dodge truck operations left. The idleness spread from cut bodies Briggs supplied to much of the motor car industry.

Paris reports an accord in principle among Britain Soviet Russia and France to form a three power mutual aid front similar to France's treaty with Moscow. Provisions Of 1939 Wheat Loan Program Explained By AAA

Farmers who complied with the 1939 wheat acreage allotment under the AAA program will be eligible for the new wheat loan plan announced by Alfred R. Barnes. The loan rates are 75 to 80 percent of the 10 year average price, aiming to keep harvest prices near current market levels. Changes from 1933 include higher rates for Great Plains and Pacific Northwest regions and larger rate increases for country notes relative to terminal loan values.

Farm Bill Goes To Committee

The House sent a 1.22 billion dollar agriculture appropriation bill to conference with the Senate without a position on 383.5 million of Senate increases. Rep Taber urged a vote, backed by Republicans and some Democrats, over the referral. Senate adds would fund parity payments farm tenant loans and surplus removal, which the House had rejected. Conference action will decide if those increases survive.
