Highmore City Employe Retires

William Whipple, recently named superintendent of water works, took over duties last Saturday as successor to J. D. Eberlein who resigned due to ill health after 32 years in Highmore’s water department. Eberlein also served as street and alley commissioner and chief of police. Whipple left his Hyde County courthouse janitor role to accept city work.

Blunt High School Issues Senior Annual This Week

Mrs Chester Gilchrist was surprised Monday evening at her home by friends and relatives who gathered to celebrate her birthday. Guests included Mr and Mrs H B Adams and daughter June, Mr and Mrs Ted Salveson and son Ved Jr, Miss Lenore Westling, and Miss Evelyn Jorgensen, all from Huron. Cavour Seniors Welcome Juniors At Banquet Night

Cavour High School juniors hosted the seniors at the annual junior senior banquet in the Marvin Hughitt Hotel dining room in Huron. The program featured speakers Eleanor Edwards and Eleanor Burgeson, musical numbers by Aphel Coughlin Punkcia O Keefe and a duet by Marion Barton and Mark Kelly, plus several talks and the Cougar Song. Afterward students and teachers attended a movie at a Huron theatre.

Pierre May 18 In dians and agency employees on South Dakota reservations show strong adherence to State Safety Council principles. Panery reported 178 first aid certificates issued at Cheyenne agency alone. The diploma certificates come after exams on treating injured persons. A large Cheyenne Safety Council meeting featured speakers Doherty Goets and Roberts.

Sunshine Mixers Name Officers At Wellington Meeting

Mrs. Fred Schrader was elected president of the Sunshine Mixers at a Monday Wellington gathering at Mrs. Ed Shaw’s home. Officers include Mrs. Sam Bungum as assistant hostess and Mrs. Charles Puleifer vice president with Mrs. Ferrald Shea as secretary and Mrs. Emma Freese treasurer. The program featured music articles by Mrs. Clarence Coop and vocal selections by Elizabeth DeHaven and Mrs. Stewart Bottum, plus two clarinet numbers. A gift was presented to Mrs. Bungum, who leaves for Idaho. June meeting will be a plenary session organized by a special committee.

Yale Lutheran Aid Has Monthly Meeting

JALE May 18. Lane Ladies Aid of the Yale Lutheran Church met with Mrs Alfred Kelley. Twenty members and five guests attended. Mrs Alfred Bodel enrolled as a new member. Quilt blocks were made and lunch served by the hostess with Mrs Phil Hornig assisting. Next meeting planned for Mrs Chris Walz home June 1.

The Forestburg PTA wrapped up the school year with a final meeting in the auditorium. A flag was presented to the primary room winner of the attendance contest and student Phyllis Strand delivered the acceptance speech. New officers and committee chairs were announced by President Mrs. J. Lemmon.

In Virgil at the Methodist Church seven seniors from Virgil High School were awarded diplomas. George McCarty of State College delivered the main address. Valedictorian Hazel Shepard and salutatorian Mary Barth led a ceremony featuring diplomas, honors, and performances by the glee clubs and mixed chorus. Supt. E J Thurston and Rev J W Proper presided as the audience attended in crimson and cream decor. In nearby Bonilla Mrs Rolla Kenison and son Blair visit Rapid City with Paul Newton and Ralph Sickles families.

Utilities Board Aided By Ruling

Pierre May 18 The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission formerly the Railroad Commission faces a funding shift. Attorney General Leo A Temmey says 11 400 annually for three commissioners should be paid from the state general fund starting July 1, replacing the salary fund allotment. The change increases the commission's available salary allowances by about 4 500 yearly, after the recent legislature cut the salary fund.

Aviator on furlough to report for Navy duty

Melvin Georges has spent two weeks with relatives in Andover and Manilla. He will travel to San Diego to report for duty in the United States Navy aviation corps. His four year enlistment ends in October.
