Aberdeen Wins National Pedestrian Safety Award 1940

Aberdeen South Dakota earned first place in AAA 1940 National Pedestrian Protection contest in the 10 000 to 50 000 population group for no pedestrian deaths 1938 39 or 1940 and a 0 1 percent drop in injuries in 1940. Watertown placed third with strong safety programs and public schooling on traffic safety.

Rites At Mobridge For Prominent S D Land Speculator

Funeral services were held in Mobridge for A H Brown 79 a leading South Dakota land speculator who died of heart disease. Brown built a vast real estate empire including the Brown Palace Hotel and 40 farms in the Dakotas with holdings in Indiana and Florida. Surviving are three sons six daughters and a stepson.

Tulare High elects student officers for 1941-42

Tulare High School students chose the 1941-42 council with President Jean Otto, Vice President Paul Robber, Secretary-Treasurer Alice Donner, and member Robert Miller. Awards Night Program At Willow Lake

The Willow Lake grade school held its annual music and awards night in the high school auditorium last Tuesday. About 77 students performed under Miss Marian Shuck. High school awards honored work in athletics music and band. grade school awards recognized perfect attendance and scholarship. Citizenship awards went to Annis Forde and Marland Tidemann. Winners in the WCTU contest were Lydia Waldner Gloria Ruer Kathleen Workenthein Calvin Poppen Earl Ohlson. A special WCTU meeting is planned next week at Mrs Pred Peck's home, with Evert Seim among those reading his fel.

Attorney General To Address Wolsey 22 Seniors May 23

Wolsey High School will end the year with 22 seniors and 12 eighth graders at Friday’s commencement. Lee Temmey, South Dakota attorney general, will speak. Worker Killed Near Yankton

YANKTON May 16 A WPA worker named Olin Thorson between 45 and 50 died of head injuries after a steel bar was driven into his head by a bolt at a Beaver Creek gravel pit rock crusher. He died en route to Yankton hospital. Survived by his wife. No inquest unless required by WPA per county coroner Dr M Morehouse. About fifteen witnesses.

Mother's Day Program Sponsored At Orient

The American Legion Auxiliary hosted a Mother's Day program Monday evening at the ALA hall in Orient. Mary Jane Conway delivered the welcome address. Bruce Conway, Maxine Eaton, Marian Davis, and Betty Schaeffers presented solos, with readings by Mrs. J. Eggerling and Mrs. Nicalaysen. The four Eggerling sisters performed, Marge Swertland and Mrs. E. Holischer offered piano solos, and guest of honor Mrs. T. Digman marked her 98th birthday.

Man Killed In Crash West Of Gettysburg

Gettysburg May 16 Special A. Tames Warrior was killed Friday of last week when his car left the road near White Horse. The vehicle rolled several times and he became trapped. Leonard Dolphus Indian police chief called the death accidental and said no inquest would be held. Clarence Shaffer was seriously hurt and his car wrecked when it hit a bridge abutment near La Plant. Traveling Paint Shops Must Pay PIERRE May 16

Attorney General Lea A Temmey advised the state motor patrol to collect truck compensation fees from insurance companies on traveling paint shops. He said painting by landlords and transporting workers and equipment does not constitute farming related property transport. Successful Play Is Held At Lake Preston

A large crowd attended the senior play Mrs. Dribbles School for Girls at Lake Preston last Tuesday evening. Paul Hammond played the school janitor and Betty Coulson portrayed Mrs. Dribbles. Highway bids open May 27 for state projects

The state highway commission will open bids May 27 for construction projects estimated by engineers at 380 thousand dollars.
