Egyptian steamer Zamzam, en route from New York to Alexandria, disappeared in the South Atlantic between Recife and Capetown. 201 passengers were aboard including 138 Americans and missionaries, ambulance drivers, and Free French forces group. William Le Grand 43, a Hitchcock farmer, drowned when a boat overturned on Lake Dudley near Hitchcock. Rescue crews from Huron recovered his body about 7 pm after over three hours of searching. The accident occurred about 3:45 pm as a brother and nephew also rode in the boat. they swam to shore.
