Prizes Awarded at University Convocation in Vermillion

At the University of South Dakota convocation in Vermillion awards and honors were announced for many students. Prizes included the Clark M Young, Joan G Doe, Richardson Pioneer Scholarship, Edwin V Mitchell, and Delta Sigma Pi among others. Recipients included Ferne Kostboth Reva Nearhead Hiram Bleeker Ralph Rice Lois Mullen Lyle Wirt Isla Kilpatrick Cleo Johnson and more. The event featured speeches by Judge Dwight Campbell and Mathew Brown with Miss Aviation 1932 Marjorie Holmquist presented at the Engineers banquet.

In Sioux Falls on May 16 Louis Morse Schaumberg of Etqnore Minn and Elnora Mayme Lewis of Bricelyn Minn obtained a marriage license from Clerk of Court Eugene Foster early in the day. They entered the office shortly after 8 o clock and were issued the license a few minutes after.

Alpena Scouts Hold Farewell for Departing Members

The Alpena Boy Scout troop No. 23 hosted a gathering at Rudolph Lundborgs home to honor two members leaving soon. Rex Jones, the scout master, could not attend due to illness and was visited at his home. Lawrence Wales departs with his parents after graduating in 1952.

Miner County Sunday School Meet Heads to Roswell

Roswell hosts the Miner county Sunday school association annual gathering from May 21 to 22. The event features sessions led by F. W. Cannon on Leadership Training and F. C. Hodges and Rev. S. E Cooper guiding Sunday services with Rev. C. W. Hamm coordinating a youth rally on the Jee and Youth topic.

Plans for Hobo Day at State College in October

Preliminary plans for the twentieth annual Hobo Day at State College on October 22 are under way. Professor George Gilbertson and Dean E Prather lead the planning committee joined by student president Jerome Krmarzick of Comfrey Minnesota. The celebration will recreate the first parade and homecoming features. University of South Dakota is slated as State's opponent in the gridiron classic. An opera company will present Hansel and Gretel.

Dentists Of State Observe Anniversary

The South Dakota State Dental Society marks its golden jubilee and 50th annual convention in Sioux Falls from May 16 to 18. The women's auxiliary holds its 10th convention while the SD Dental Assistants group pursues its second annual session. Lectures clinics exhibits and demonstrations are planned over the three days.

South Dakota Bakers Convene In Sioux Falls

The South Dakota Bakers unit of the South Dakota Manufacturers and Employers association opens a three day session in Sioux Falls starting Tuesday. Attendees exceed 100 as they discuss production and selling problems, shop costs, materials, labor, administration and sales. C. S Morton of Pierre leads sales methods. advertising is presented. talks on unfair trade practices and the bread law are planned.

Huge egg eclipse as county hens lay giant prize egg

In Spencer county hens vie for largest egg with a Rhode Island Red winning a monster egg. The egg measures eight inches around one way and nine and three quarters inches the long way, shocking local roosters and farmers alike. In Ashton seniors were entertained at a four course dinner hosted by Miss Agatha Watkins and Bruce Boyer.

Cash Basis For Schools Planned

South Dakota proposals by R W Kraushaar recommend cash basis funding for all districts by 1934. Plans include annual or semi annual interest on warrants, replacement of registered warrants with certificates of indebtedness, and bonding options to cover emergencies. He argues debt limits and extended payments are key to keeping districts on a cash footing.

BROOKINGS May 16 Large attendance is assured at the second annual newspaper Day at State college May 20 with editors bringing entire staffs for discussions on machines presses and typography in the morning and on business news and editorials in the afternoon and evening. A dual track meet finals with Carleton college and medal awards at HO. T. C. field day are scheduled. Dean A. L. Stone of the University of Montana will judge editorials, and Prof. W. A. Summer of the University of Wisconsin will speak on what readers of weekly papers desire.

Fire at Bryant Stoltz meat market causes minor damage

A fire at the Otto Stoltz meat market smoke house in Bryant May 14 was started by windblown embers from burning rubbish in an alley. The Bryant fire department used a chemical unit to prevent spread to nearby structures. the building was unoccupied, so losses were minor.

South Dakota's Best Sportsman To Be Selected At Lake Kampeska

The Izaak Walton league state convention at Lake Kampeska June 26 to 28 will name South Dakota's champion all around sportsman through seven events including trap pistol and rifle shooting fly casting and other activities. Notable speakers include Senator Norbeck Governor Green and candidates Tom Berry and AW G Cherry. The program covers tours to fish hatcheries the Waters town sewage plant the Big Sioux river diversion dam and a sports show and banquet.

State Fire Officers Attend Doland Banquet

Doland May 16 State Fire Marshal Walker and Fire Chief Olding were guests at a Doland volunteer fire department banquet held in the Methodist church basement. Dr H W Sherwood acted as toastmaster and introduced talks. Paul Shore Edwin Garrett performed solos and duets on cornet and trombone with Mrs Dorothy Lovelace accompanying.

Bonilla Club Elects Officers and Plans Summer Picnic

The Bonilla Willing Workers club met with Mrs. Earl Russell for its regular session electing Mrs. Wilford Martin as chairman, Mrs. Roy Cooper as vice chairman, and Mrs. Marvin Martin as secretary-treasurer. Seventeen members and two visitors attended with ten children. Lunch was served by Mrs. Roy Cooper and others. Meetings will be suspended until fall.

Wellington Springs May 16 figures from the Jerauld county treasurer show automobile registrations this year are about 348 dollars lower than last year. Auto registrations to date are 1 178 this year versus 1 581 in 1951. Truck registrations run 144 this year against 217 in 1431.

A soft drink company must remove a large number of signs posted in the Black Hills forest after forest officers ruled no signs may be placed on forest land except highway markers.
