South Dakota Lines Up Public Works Plan With Federal Aid

State planners in Pierre report progress on a $4 million request for a public works program. Reforestation water conservation and soil erosion projects on state lands are planned across multiple counties pending congressional action. County officials expect small check dams and vegetation restoration to curb erosion, with 15 to 50 person camps under military supervision.

Highmore Visitors Return To Edgemont

Mrs. George Baughman and children Phyllis and Junior returned to Edgemont after visiting relatives in Highmore and Aberdeen. In Highmore they stayed with Mrs. Baughman’s sister and husband the O’Briens. The family attended the C L convention in Pierre where the twins sang. They traveled back with Rev. S J Vernon formerly of Highmore now in Edgemont. Mrs. Vernon attended the state Congregational church conference in Sioux Falls. Mrs. James Haralin and Rhoda Dickenson also joined the trip to Sioux Falls for the conference.

Highmore Junior Class Circus Banquet Delights Guests

Highmore High School junior class staged a circus themed banquet at the Methodist church. Leo Tompkins acted as toastmaster while seniors Freda Schorzman and Dale Robinson led dances. Decorations, toasts, and a three ring circus program highlighted the evening featuring students and community volunteers.

Highmore Girl Reported Improving After Pneumonia

Len Poe Fekrins reports nine year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Perkins is greatly improved after a critical illness since Wednesday with pneumonia and related complications. Mr. Perkins edits the Highmore Herald.

Large Attendance At Rebekah Assembly Meeting

Residents from Wilton Lake Boyant Erwin Lake Preston and Iroquois attended the 2th district Rebekah assembly in Desmet about 75 were present. Mrs Leon Lamont of Iroquois resigned as president and Mrs J H Leubs of De Smet was elected to fill the vacancy. Mrs F H Van Tas gel of Bancroft was assembly secretary and Mrs Iva Borland Roberts of Madison served as guardian.

Special from Cavour reports a Sunday morning shower delivering about 0.38 inches. The rainfall boosts soil moisture, revives dormant corn and other crops, and benefits gardens and lawns, lifting farmer morale after a dry spell.

To Permit Grazing On South Dakota Antelope Preserve

The South Dakota Game and Fish Commission will allow grazing for about 400 cattle on Harding County antelope preserve this summer. Permits cost 50 cents per head per month, no bulls allowed, and the 10,000 acre reserve is enclosed and spring watered. Applications go to Earl Knepper, Buffalo preserve foreman.

Ames Iowa May 10 Rex Beresford extension animal husbandman at Iowa State College urges self feeding of baby beeves on summer pasture as a time and labor saving method. He notes rapid economical gains from self feeding with oats crushed corn and cobmeal gradually increasing shelled corn, starting calves at the feeder and using proper feeder design care and regular feeding.

Scott Named Manager of American Legion Camp at Custer

May 10 report says Millard G. Scott of Mission, formerly assistant director of the state rural credit department, is appointed manager of the American Legion tourist camp in Custer State Park. About $20,000 has been spent on camp improvements over recent months.

Cavour Youths Join Forest Service Draft

Several Cavour boys have applied for the forest service and were sent out on the first draft. Accepted youths include Francis Costello Thomas Corrigan Forrest Owens Jerald Brinkman and Forrest Currier. They left last week and there is no word yet on their locations.

Standard Bearers Gather At Alpena SLPENS

The Standard Bearer girls met with Miss Charlotte Myran and Miss Myrtle Wessler in charge. Miss Vesta Triplett led the devotional and Miss Gertrude Schmidt directed the program on missionary work in India and education there. Several members participated and lunch was served by the hostess.

Huron youths plead not guilty to Drake Store robbery

Three Huron youths Russell Miller Paul Weese and Hugh Palmer pleaded not guilty to first degree robbery charges for the Drake Store hold up at Pumpkin Center. A jury trial was tentatively set for Tuesday as the judge scheduled proceedings.
