Briefs in Contempt Appeal From SD Supreme Court

Aberdeen American News and its editor and publisher filed briefs appealing contempt judgments from Circuit Judge J. H. Bottum. They argue the rulings violate freedom of publication, claim the editorials were true and not contemptuous, and that evidence was insufficient. Bury Family Of Six Die In Rapid City Fire

Rapid City reports funeral services were held for six members of the John W. Wilcox family killed in a Monday morning blaze that consumed their two room home. Father used kerosene to start the morning fire. three other children escaped, and the bodies lay in Mountain View Cemetery.

Winter Wheat Prospects Reported By Agriculture Department

Washington May 10 The Agriculture Department forecast this year s winter wheat crop at 337 485 000 bushels based on the May 1 condition of 66 7 per cent of a normal compared with 334 037 000 bushels a month earlier and 462 151 000 last year The rye crop was forecast at 30 502 000 bushels with a 75 6 per cent normal on May 1 compared with 79 855 000 last year and 7 25 per cent on April 1 this year The report showed winter wheat acreage for harvest at 27 096 000 acres and sown last fall at 39 985 000 acres with abandonment at 32 2 per cent up from 16 7 per cent in 1941 32 and 12 2 per cent average 1921 30 The rye acreage averaged 2 054 000 acres down from 3 721 000 last year The hay condition May 1 stood at 153 per cent of a normal with farm hay stocks about 710 599 000 tons 13 0 per cent of last year The percentage of departures May 1 was 15 per cent normal versus 14 19 years ago and 81 7 the year average

Purses Stolen At Choir Party In Huron Home

Four Huron women at a Methodist Episcopal choir farewell party at Henry Kingdon's home 331 Seventh Street Southwest reported purses with about 25 dollars missing. Victims included Mrs. F. C. Hocking and Miss Alma Anderson, with others losing smaller sums or checks. Burglars entered before 11 pm through a rear door while guests prepared to leave. intruders were not seen. Mrs. A. W. Possession Of Beer Leads To Fine In County Court

Glen Martinson of Lake county was fined 50 dollars after pleading guilty to possessing beer. He was arrested late Tuesday at Salem by Sheriff Morris Gregory. The McCook county sheriff said Martinson had 56 cases of beer bought in Minnesota.
