Hundreds homeless as eastern seaboard fires scorch New York areas, New Jersey brush burns, Long Island grass fires haze skies. Nashua New Mexico battles 225 homes lost, two churches, a school and four plants razed in a Sunday blaze with $2.5 million plus damage.
Lincoln Neb January reports scientist J C Jen gen of Nebraska Wesleyan University measured 3073 lightning discharges from clouds. He notes 1579 show negative lower cloud charges and about ten percent positive, with photographs suggesting branch directions for positive and negative discharges though several exceptions occur.
Weather parts show a mix of cloudiness and light precipitation. In Huron area expect mostly cloudy tonight and Tuesday with probable rain and cooler tonight. South Dakota remains unsettled with possible showers, mainly in the north, and cooler tonight with rising temperatures by Tuesday in the extreme north.

He praised McMaster’s record for agriculture, labor rights, and public service, with local notices of property transfers in Huron.
Rapid City May 5 Gutzon Borglum proposed making Mount Rushmore the focal point of the 1932 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. He said Washington and Jefferson heads would reach the waist by then, with the Washington head the largest yet carved. He will spend the summer at his ranch near the memorial, directing exacting work to finish eyes and other features by late June for a July 4 dedication.
Miss Beatrice Bannister of Watertown injured when the car she rode in veered into a ditch to avoid a collision with another vehicle on a rural Beadle Spink county road. The 60th annual Congregational conference closed with an address by Fred B. Smith of New York. More than 300 visitors attended, including about 175 pastors and delegates. The 40 et 8 district meeting was held in the Hotel Marvin Hughitt in Huron with representatives from Central South Dakota towns including Mitchell and Brookings. Plans for the future and reports on recent activities were discussed. The next district meeting will be in Brookings next fall and an initiation is planned for the first day of the state convention in Sioux Falls with a large class anticipated.
