Severe weather across Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska leaves two more fatalities and widespread damage. Western Oklahoma bore the brunt as torrential rain and tornado winds ripped through towns, flooding basements and crippling sewers. Rainfall totals for May push the year past normal as forecasts promise more showers and cooler air.
A large tornado system swept across central Kansas into northern Nebraska and south central Nebraska. In Blaine County Oklahoma near Greenfield a 63 year old man Wes C T Bush and a 16 year old black boy named Edwards were killed. About 20 injured, some seriously, and thousands of dollars in damage. In Walters Oklahoma three cotton gins and a dozen homes razed with losses around 159000. Central Kansas losses near Langdon, Kenya? EWin wood and Lorraine estimated at about 200000. Four farm homes swept away between Grand Island and Hastings Nebraska with no injuries as families took refuge in storm cellars. Storms also hit northeast Kansas, northwest Missouri and parts of Nebraska. Two deaths in Kickapoo Kansas and six killed near Nerborne Missouri. Livestock killed and homes wrecked in central Nebraska with several injuries, including a farmer near Elgin crushed under debris and another near Petersburg with a mangled hand from a tractor incident. The storm tracked from Juanita and Kenesaw west of Hastings toward Hastings Grand Ystrid Philips and St Libory, then eastern edge of Greeley county.
Five day old Sam Gross died at his parents home in Fairfield township early today. Funeral services will be at Hofer church 23 miles northeast of Hu ron with Rev. Joseph Hofer officiating. Burial in Hofer cemetery. Survived by parents a twin sister and four brothers and sisters.
Unsettled conditions persist tonight and Wednesday with probable showers. Temperatures fall tonight then rise by Wednesday. In eastern areas and north central portions expect cooler overnight with warming trend in western and southern regions on Wednesday.
Washington May 6 The government moved to suppress all sale of paraphernalia for liquor manufacture. Prohibition Commissioner Doran said the Supreme Court decision upholding seizure of bottles casks and corks in Pittsburgh gives the bureau a weapon to strike every large concern producing such articles. After the big dealers are wiped out the bureau will go down the line.
Five and possibly seven high schools will take part in the annual Central South Dakota Music festival at Huron college auditorium. Hosted by the Huron Chamber of Commerce for National Music Week, entries include Alpena Lake Preston Wolsey Woonsocket Yale with possible Wessington Bancroft. A massed chorus featuring over 100 voices directed by Hardin A. Van Deursen starts at 8:15 p.m. Also planned are band entries from Woonsocket Lake Preston, plus girls glee clubs and an Wolsey orchestra. Huron high school and Huron college groups join in the program.
Preliminary checks show turnout for today s primary light with 1334 ballots cast by 1 pm across wards. Contests include governor and U S Senate races with candidates such as W H McMaster J Danforth W J Bulow James McNamara L B Corey and others shaping a potentially record or near record vote in today s polls.
The state fair board let contracts for reroofing five speed barns used for race horses and two additional buildings at the state fair grounds to Aberdeen Sheet Metalworks and Huron Construction. United Sound Engineering of St Paul won the loudspeaker system contract after reviewing six other firms.
South Dakota Bankers association group five to hold annual dinner Friday May 9 in Huron. Program features brief welcomes by Paul Myers and Jay B Allen, talks by George Zimmer and E F Herzig, a Gardner address and a harp solo by Mrs W M Griffith. Officers listed are M R Brown Onida president, Russell Bard Miller vice president, and George M Townsend Huron secretary treasurer.
Miller high school faces a rebuilding track season as Coach Wood s notes no star athletes to fill Weert Engiemann’s shoes yet highlights several returning performers. Hollywood reports Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon intend to marry on June 1. The engaged couple recently leased a beach house for the ceremony preparations as both stars remain active on the film lot and will not take an immediate wedding trip.
CHICAGO May 644 The loving care shown by two burglars for a baby marked the jewel theft at Edward Solovy apartment yesterday. They met Mrs Solovy in the hall and escorted her with pistols into the apartment. They bound her to a chair then freed her arms to hold the infant. The baby cried and then they fed it milk prepared by Mrs Solovy. After calming the child they took jewelry valued at 5200 and fled.
RAPID CITY May 4 A brochure on the Mount Rushmore monumental work by Gutzon Borglum will be ready June 1. The book, illustrated with views of the monument, covers its history and is to be distributed widely to national leaders and institutions. Revenue supports the memorial fund and the project will be funded by federal matching dollars.
Madrid reports say the University of Madrid was closed by order as heavy police patrolled streets to curb rioting by students advocating a Spanish republic. A riot Thursday into yesterday left one dead and at least 35 injured, including twenty students. Premier Berenguer pledged steps to keep peace and hinted arrests would not target Don Miguel de Unamuno, exiled rector of Almanaca University, who had urged republicanism.
A Chicago woman halted a planned bombing of the Moorish Temple by entering a truck hidden behind the building. She discovered 40 sticks of dynamite with percussion caps inside and alerted a policeman. The would be attackers fled, leaving the temple’s headquarters for a Negro cult unharmed.
Mrs W E Renn of Aberdeen died Sunday night at her sister’s home Mrs O B Lund 706 Illinois Avenue Southwest. Services will be Wednesday at 2 30 p m at Kynon’s chapel with Rev S D Disrud of the American Lutheran church officiating. The body will go to Pierre for short services at the home of Mrs J F Burris and burial in Riverside Cemetery Pierre.
Watertown shows 10 251 and Aberdeen 163 as Huron’s preliminary federal census count lists 10 774 residents, a 2 442 rise since 1920. Wards tally shows 1 492 in North, 1 38 in Second, 3 751 in Third, and 4th ward figures. The report notes Morningside not within city limits.
Washington hearing on group and chain banking included James A. Bacigalupi of Bank of Italy advocating international branch banks. He cited Italy's model and California's expansive system, noting head offices could exist beyond New York in cities like Minneapolis San Francisco Detroit Chicago and more. He argued branch banking across wide areas reduces costs and losses, improves service, and strengthens capital and credit. D. E. Huronians not counted in the federal census are urged to report to George W. Hill at the Huron Chamber of Commerce this week. Secretary Paul F. Rivers notes Huron has five days to locate missed individuals and determine whether they were enumerated.
London marks the twentieth anniversary of King George V's accession with a quiet observance. Twenty one guns sounded in Hyde Park, bells rang at St George's chapel and Windsor, flags flew on public buildings, and medals were given for long service. The king arrives at Buckingham Palace after Windsor to spend five weeks of state functions, amid a wartime shadow and uncertain outlook for India.
The Rev. R. P. Bob Shuler of Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church South starts a three day jail sentence for contempt of court. Convicted yesterday on six of seven counts for criticizing two superior court judges in Julian Petroleum trials, he faces four five day jail terms and fines totaling ten dollars. He is expected to be released May 2.
