Singing Lobster Fossils Stir Nighttime Tales in South Dakota
In Vermillion on March 24 a report claims Podocrates Canadenses Whiteaves, a long extinct singing lobster from the Cretaceous era, once roamed western South Dakota. Fossils found near Belle Fourche by Prof. W. V. Searight and Harold Norbeck are now in the geology department, with relatives surviving off Florida and Japan. The species measured up to 10 inches with a boxy body and ridged back, its limbs and sensory organs producing a rasping sound, though it could not hear its own song. Fossils are restricted to North America at three sites: Albert Canada Tennessee and western South Dakota.
