The Huron tax office faced a closing rush as filers hurried to submit returns before midnight. W. P. Buck of Aberdeen and E. R. Preston of Minneapolis expected to return to their state HQ tonight. Assist ance averaged 40 people daily with over 4.2 million individuals needing to file. Most would owe nothing due to below taxable incomes.

State Bank Depositors Body Extends Across South Dakota

Machinery advances to extend the State Bank Depositors Protective Association to all closed banks in the state. May Concentrate Courts On Chicago Crime Cases

Chicago March 16 A drastic plan to clear Cook county criminal docket contemplated by the courts calls for concentrating full court strength on criminal cases and suspending civil and divorce hearings. Two courts would use all four judges for crime, with an emergency court for injunctions and urgent civil matters. Thousands of civil damages cases totaling over a quarter of a billion dollars would be held in abeyance while crime work proceeds, with six weeks needed to restore the calendar.

James River Water Level Drops From Yesterday High

Observers note the James River fell to about 10.7 feet, down from yesterday’s high mark of 2 feet. Ice conditions in the northern part of the state may have caused the drop, with crest levels possibly reached. The river near Columbia, south of the North Dakota line, is monitored as the Chicago and North Western bridge crosses the river. Division heads report no unusual conditions at their point.

Snow melt floods sweep across Iowa and Missouri with raging streams and blocked roads. Reported damage includes washed dirt roads and threatened bridges as rivers surged from Polk County toward the Mississippi. Former South Dakota Pioneer Dies in Civil War Veteran

Civil war veteran Hammer Reimer, born in Sweden, homesteaded in Clay County before moving to South Dakota in 1903. He is survived by a son. Funeral services are planned for Saturday at the local church.
