Call Mites Worst Poultry Enemies' Call Mites Worst Poultry
Brookings June 20 WP Mites are one of the greatest enemies of poultry during summer according to J Weisner extension poultryman at South Dakota State college. They hide in cracks and crevices by day and crawl to fowls at night to suck blood and return to hiding places at daybreak. Roosts should be lifted and supports inspected for mites. Carbolineum or crude carbolic acid applied full strength at the roost end prevents trouble for the season. Three parts waste or crankcase oil with one part kerosene used as a spray controls mites but must be applied every two or three weeks. Birds should be examined for body lice and nicotine sulphate or sodium fluoride blue ointment may be used on roosts.
