Grand Encampment Opens With Record Crowd
The 49th annual South Dakota Grand Encampment of the C. O. F. opened with a record attendance as 52 of 53 encampments answered roll call. Zina Richey of Yankton received a standing ovation, with Warren Osborn of Yankton noted as South Dakota’s oldest living initiated Odd Fellow. Seventeen candidates joined the grand encampment degree and honors were presented to past grand patriarchs D. K. Batchelor, Dick Stevenson, and J. R. Chase for service to local encampments. Albert Yonker of Pierre received the Decoration of Chivalry, an elective honorary degree held by limited members, while the Rebekah Assembly met for instruction and assembly degree.

Search continues for three bodies after airliner crash
In Folkestone England boats and tugs scoured the English Channel for the bodies of three women missing after the City of Ottawa airliner crash near Dungeness. Seven lives were lost including American Adolph E Meister and Miss Roberts of London. One survivor, W Tatham, rested well and may travel to London. Inquests will be held for all victims.
