Crop Hopes Fade With Hot Weather
The Farmers Union Terminal association said the weeklong extreme heat has caused permanent injury to much wheat in the northwest, with Montana suffering the most loss and North and South Dakota seeing premature ripening. Rain and cooler temps are needed to halt damage, though some regions report earlier than usual growth and rust susceptibility. Labor and machinery use may decline as farmers cut costs amid low grain prices.
