Pierre South Dakota Rural Credits board may lift its lien on crops on state farms to allow tenants to secure federal seed loans. Attorney General’s office interpretation suggests the state, like a business, is liable in business ventures, so the board may act to waive liens.

The South Dakota supreme court upheld the nine month sentences of Dewey and William Pond for stealing 22 chickens from Yankton County. The court also affirmed F A Floe’s adultery conviction and reversed and remanded Kenstler and Kenstler’s grand larceny conviction for sheep theft. It reversed B A Butler’s Arlington municipal court conviction with instructions to sustain the justice.

The Diet today passed on third reading the new liquor control bill from the government following the prohibition referendum. The final tally was 19 to 45 in Helsingfors.

Deadwood Boy To Enter Annapolis

Lawrence Bernard an 18 year old Deadwood native and son of Mr and Mrs George Bernard has earned an appointment through Senator William J Bulow to the US Naval Academy at Annapolis Maryland. He left for the east to begin a two month preparatory course after graduating Deadwood High School last June. Bernard is nephew of Lieut J B Manseau an instructor at the naval academy.

Shanghai war rumor sparks violent anti Japanese riot

In Shanghai on January 30 1 seetling the city faced grave disorder as reports from Nanking claimed the national government would declare war on Japan. Japanese Marines in plain clothes and civilians roamed the international settlement burning, beating and killing Chinese refugees while seeking alleged snipers. The United States and Great Britain protested Japan's Shanghai seizure as naval forces prepare to protect American lives in China. Rapid City man George O'Brien and aliss Kelly faced charges for plotting to kidnap Edward H Swander head of Swander Baking Company and hold him for 10000 ransom.
