Deny Clemency For Patrick J Hanley In 1927 Bank Robbery Case
Pierre January 14 The South Dakota pardon board denied clemency in the pardon appeal of Patrick J Hanley a gang member linked to the Farmers and Merchants bank of Huron robbery in 1927. The board said it could not recommend commutation or a pardon. Also denied were Ira Penland and August Claeys petitions. Penland serves a three year term for grand larceny and Claeys three and a half years for burglary. Hanley and three other gang members were captured after the Twin Cities escape and later sentenced to eleven years. About 15000 in cash and bonds were taken. The robbery occurred around 1 am with a car escape, and the state's attorney office previously declined to recommend Hanley.

Logan Iowa January 16 three men died in a fiery crash when a light roadster rear ended a truck two miles north of town. Harold Anderson 30 Glen Grooms 22 and Ess Withem 38 all from Mordamin Iowa were identified as the victims. Driver Arovid Schroten of Odebolt said the lighter car struck the rear of the truck and burst into flames as he backed away. The bodies were brought to Logan.
