School Officers To Meet Feb 27 in Beadle County

Beadle county school officers will gather Friday February 27 in the county courthouse court room. RW Kraushaar state high school inspector will explain a new accounting system and proposed changes affecting certificates tuition and accrediting for independent consolidated and district schools. Two sessions are planned morning for independent and consolidated officers and afternoon for district officers with clerks and treasurers urged to attend.

Forestburg Home Extension Club Met in February

The Forestburg Home Extension club held its February 17 meeting at Mrs. B Corwin’s home with Mrs. George Roberts assisting. Demonstrations on posture and undergarments were presented by Mesdames Briggs and Gere, models shown, and patterns shared. Seventeen members and six visitors attended. the next meeting is planned for March 10 at Mrs Halvor Fouberg’s home with a supper to follow.

Mitchell residents and local groups push for a new veterans hospital with support letters from South Dakota representatives. A Senate bill seeks a 356000 dollar appropriation led by Senator Smoot of Utah, while location remains undecided.

South Dakota Eyes Major Changes in Primary System

Nisland residents report another dog poisoning attempt with no definite clues. R. H. Randall’s dog died last week and Irene Sampont’s dog was poisoned but survived. Public anger over pet poisonings rises, and officials say action will follow if guilty parties are identified.

Purchasing Company Formed At Aberdeen

Farmers of this vicinity voted to draw up and file articles of incorporation for a Brown county purchasing company at a meeting held here this week. Another meeting will be held on March 4, when by-laws drawn up by a committee will be submitted. The new organization is backed by the county farm bureau and will buy fertilizer seed coal twine and other articles in large quantities direct from wholesalers.

Railroad panel opposes freight rate hikes on cattle

Pierr e February 29 The state board of railroad commissioners announced opposition to proposed rate increases on stocker and feeder cattle and sheep from Montana and North Dakota to South Dakota. They filed protests with the Interstate Commerce Commission against higher rates by the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific Railway. The board said current tariffs are adequate and urged suspension and hearing. They also protested attempts to raise charges by extending minimum weights on some commodities. The board argued small car protections would be removed under new rules. Also, the commission plans to take to the federal commission arguments on carload fruit rates from Colorado to South Dakota and other western states, asserting present rates are excessive. An I C C examiner found rates not unreasonable, with exceptions filed.

Articles filed in Pierre on February 20 show two Mitchell companies incorporating. The Mitchell Builders with $100,000 capital is led by John J. Verschoor Peter Kuipers and Walter J. Dixon of Mitchell. The Philip E Mizel Company Inc an automobile firm organizes with $50,000 capital by Philip E Mizel Esther Mizel of Mitchell and Morris E Adelstein of Rapid City.

Improvement Seen in South Dakota Unemployment

TEAPOLIS Feb 2 A report by Richard E. Jones district director of the U S employment service notes marked unemployment in eastern South Dakota's large cities but predicts a decided improvement in labor conditions within 60 days. Western South Dakota shows fairly satisfactory conditions while meat packing plants run normally. Sioux Falls has a surplus of building tradesmen railroad workers and unskilled labor with improving prospects after spring. Huron reports a surplus of railroad workers and builders with active January farm labor demand and meat packing employing normal quotas.

Hyde County Passes Goal In Relief Work

Hyde County relief effort progresses as the citizen committee led by Max, formed to coordinate aid, reports reaching the target goal. Local volunteers organize shipments, fundraisers, and distribution to displaced families amid winter hardship.

Hyde County Flour Drive Supports Red Cross Relief

J G Kunser Ryan and fellow volunteers shipped a carload of flour to the American Red Cross in Little Rock Ark for relief work. The county raised 733.68. Redfield Co operative Milling sold it for 533.00 and shipped freight free. After expenses a surplus of about 10 remains to aid needy Hyde County farmers.
