Coed debaters from the University of South Dakota will face three Nebraska colleges in decision debates this Friday and Saturday. Doane, Crete. Hastings and Nebraska Wesleyan, Lincoln. One Act Play Contest slated at Dakota Wesleyan

Mitchell hosts the second annual high school one act play contest on Friday April 24 at Dakota Wesleyan University. Four plays in the forenoon and afternoon will lead to a night performance in the university chapel before an audience for the Science Open House. Prizes include a silver loving cup for the best school and individual honors for best actress and actor. Dallas High School won last year’s event.

Highmore Chapter to Welcome Eastern Star Official

Highmore chapter No. 68 Eastern Star will receive Mrs. Elizabeth Burnett worthy grand matron on Friday February 20. A school of instruction will be held in the afternoon and the chapter will exemplify the work in the evening. A six oclock banquet is planned for members and visitors.

Sioux Falls Girl Wins Place in National Journalism Contest

Evelyn Heinz of Cathedral high Sioux Falls won fourth place in the current news contest of the national high school journalism society Quill and Scroll announced in Des Moines George H Gallup declared results. Honorable mentions went to La Verne Downey and Peat Bechtold from Sioux Falls along with Charles Page and Laodice Downey from Cathedral and Washington high schools.

State college poll names top women and men

In a student contest at State college the Industrist Collegian named Margaret Townsend editor and crowned Frances Brown and Margaret Lentz as top female students. Maryin Trostein and Russell Hurt were noted as best all around male student and most popular man, while Prof. A. B. Mathews was shown as the most popular professor.

Marriage Licenses Issued At Redfield February Week

Redfield records show licenses granted February 1 to Wayne Patterson and Loretta Rich in Spink County amid Friday the 13th superstition talk. Highmore Debaters Lose to Springs in Debates

Highmore affirmative Opal Hanson and Paul Whiteside faced Rose Quirk and Edna McKellip of Wessington Springs in two debates at Wessington Springs, both decided 3-0 for Springs. Earlier in Highmore, the afternoon round favored Highmore 3-0, while the evening round went Springs 2-1. A social gathering followed in the domestic science rooms.

Sixth of Radio Series On Saturday in Vermillion

The sixth of eight addresses from the University of South Dakota home economics series will air Saturday at 10 30 AM on KUSD. Mrs Edith Abell assistant professor speaks on Clothing for the Younger Members of the Family. Other talks are planned February 24 Meals for the Family and February 1 Feeding the girl at the university.

Vermillion February 18 The University of South Dakota president Dr Herman G James told the Parent Teachers association that today’s university offers opportunities for youth fit to seize them. He said classroom study forms core truths across disciplines and that human contact with professors peers and leaders adds value though the university cannot force students to pursue opportunities. He urged parents to prepare students beyond high school for the vast chances available.

Highmore hosts district debate tournament at Highmore high school on Saturday February 21. Drawings list Weasing ton and Blunt byes. Morning matches include Highmore affirmative vs Huron negative at 10:00 a.m. and Pierre negative vs Miller affirmative at 11:30. Two afternoon debates lead to evening finals. extemporaneous speaking at 8:00 a.m. with one entry per school.

Brookings February 13 Observing the forty four year mark since founding the pharmacy division at State College presents a historical display. It recalls the first graduating class of 1890 with four members including I D Aldrich Pierre W S Bent Jey and others. Prof. James H Shepard the first instructor. Cyril G Hopkins later detailed student work around 1891. Harvey N Ott became first professor in 1895 with D F Jones succeeding him. E R Searles is now dean.

A February 19 Valentine party was hosted in the high school building with games and refreshments. Valentines were distributed after the event while grade school pupils held room parties with treats and cards.

Spink County citizens donate wheat for drought relief

Spink county residents contributed 1000 bushels of wheat to be milled into flour for drought relief in Arkansas. 820 sacks of 49 pounds each were shipped free by the Chicago and Northwestern railway to the Red Cross in Warren, with each bag tagged as donated by Spink county citizens. The Redfield Cooperative Mills milled the flour at minimal cost, and funds exist to complete a second carload, pending Red Cross approval.

Forty-Four Schools Enter Music Contest in District

Forty four high schools entered the district music contest to be held at Eastern State Teachers college on April 31 and May 1. Vernon Noah of the college music staff, in charge of arrangements, announced the entries. Five schools applied for Class A division including Canton and Fland.
