Enforcement urged for headlight law in South Dakota

Pierre South Dakota motor vehicle director Andrew Marvick urged sheriffs and police to enforce the 1929 headlight provisions. He said stations exist statewide for proper adjustment, emphasized education over arrests, noted ongoing noncompliance, and announced a fourth auto adjuster school to be held January 2–3 at State College Brookings.

Brookings youth jailed after toy pistol hold up arrest

A 16 year old Brookings boy used a toy pistol to threaten teens in cars during secret petting parties. Night officer Rideout arrested him after a victim reported the incident. The toy pistol jammed in the officer’s holster and the youth was placed in juvenile custody.

Wesleyan Receives $11,000 From Estate Bequests

In Alpena on December 20 a willow twig method by Ole M Pederson located two water veins at the P O Pederson farm twelve miles west and north of Alpena. The dug well is sixteen feet deep with six feet of water after eight attempts.

Augustana Plans Three Day Music Festival

Augustana college conservatory of music announced a three day festival for April 2 3 and 4 featuring professional artists college ensembles and the college symphony orchestra. The April 4 program will include a string trio with Isador Berger Alexander Asti and Bruno Steindel all renowned musicians. The spring concerts by the college choir and symphony orchestra will open the event with classical selections directed by Dr Richard Gudergalin and Dr Carl Youngdahl.

Loss by smut costs South Dakota wheat growers

Brookings reports a loss of about 1 million dollars to wheat farmers due to smut infection. A conference of agronomists from South Dakota State College and the U S Department of Agriculture noted 22.55 percent of the 1923 wheat crop was smutty and projected similar losses this year. Barley and oats losses will be nearly as large.

Congressman William Raynor dies in airplane crash

Solon, Dec 26 Special. William Kirke Raynor of Springfield Massachusetts, congressman and Buffalo county resident, died in a regent airplane crash. He farmed in Buffalo county as a farm hand on the Ingerson farm and later as a sheep herder on the Ziehach ranch, now Jerauld County Bank president. He was the fifth of nine children and lived with his mother and stepfather J B Stamp near Gann Valley. In 1927 he visited his Buffalo county home before his election to Congress.

Farmers urge oil price relief in South Dakota letter

A letter from a farmer advocate cites eight to nine cents for fuel off, six cents less than kerosene, claiming hundreds of farmers rely on oil burning heaters and waders. The author appeals to law and asks for action to stop perceived oil company manipulation and save farmers 200 to 500 dollars annually.
