Winter Wheat Acreage Increase Shown In Survey
Sioux Falls reports from December 24 show rye acreage in South Dakota fell 25 percent to 576,000 acres while winter wheat rose 39 percent to 271,000 acres in fall sowings. Senior statistician Evan V. Jones notes the shift reflects 1943 crop losses and effort to grow more wheat and feed crops the 1944 season. The increase mainly occurs in the southern counties with limited fall moisture.

Baled Straw Silo Demonstration Near De Smet
De Smet, Brookings December 24. H O Fritzel reports baled straw makes an excellent silo on his farm. The silo is 16 feet in diameter and about 17 feet tall when full, with heavy steel wire drawn tightly around each row of bales. Wires are tightened daily as the silo fills, using sticks as axle and lever. Fritzel feeds silage to about 100 cattle all winter and has built two permanent upright silos. He started with demonstrations by agent Charles Sayre in Kingsbury County and favors baled straw over baled hay for cattle feed.
