South Dakota board urges ICC to deny Burlington branch abandonment

The South Dakota railroad commission recommended to the Interstate Commerce Commission that Burlington’s application to abandon the Spearfish Canyon branch be denied. The board cited branch earnings, mining activity, and community impact, noting profits from mainline do not justify abandonment and highlighting recent reopening of Trojan and mining work. Hearing occurred Oct 24 and 25, with briefs filed later and record submitted to the ICC.

Springs PEO Chapter Holiday Party in Wellington

Specially Chapter D PEO held its annual Christmas party at Mrs. Fred N Dunham's home. Christmas carols were sung and Mrs H C Whitney read a Christmas story, followed by games and gifts. Entertainment was by Mrs Lou ise Buck, Mrs J W Foster, Mrs H C Whitney, and Mrs Fred M Dunham. Refreshments were served by the hostess.

Funeral for C. J. Peterson in Gann Valley

Funeral services conducted by Rev. RB Keithahn for C. J. Peterson who lived in the area since 1911 and served as Buffalo county commissioner 1928 to 1932. He died December 14 at 74 in a Mitchell hospital after illness. Born in Gothenburg Sweden he came to the U S at 18 and homesteaded in Haakon county. Survived by his widow and two sons and two daughters.

Frankfort Juniors Sponsor Program At Firemen Hall

A junior class program at the Frankfort high school was hosted in the Firemen's hall before a large crowd. The event featured glee club numbers, a Virginia Reel performed by eight girls, a piano duet by Wilda Wiles and Arline Reynolds, a humorous reading by Philip Heina, tap dances by Cecil Cartnes, and music by the Kitchen Band. Guest hosts included the Rockham high school's junior class and supervisor Miss Melva Jenness.

Graveling Of Ree Heights Streets Underway

In Ree Heights twenty five to thirty workers will begin graveling all graded streets under a Civil Works project. A $10,000 appropriation was approved by Pierre officials last week. Gravel will be taken from the Shearer farm southwest of Ree Heights and work will start within a few days.
