Supreme Court limits county taxing power on judgments

The state Supreme Court ruled county commissioners cannot levy taxes beyond statutory limits for paying judgment creditors, reversing a Mellette County circuit court decision that covered 16 cases and $276,154.49 in judgments. Attorneys argued a separate statute governed these payments.

The act is seen as aiming to impose broad limits on local taxing powers. Judge St. Clair Smith notes the ruling does not involve legislative control over levy rates. The court also upholds a Codington County circuit decision dismissing a damage suit by Kay Hill against Dakota Warehouse Co after a highway 212 crash near Watertown on Oct 21, 1936.

Red Cross Relief Spending In Europe Reported By Roosevelt

President Roosevelt announced the American Red Cross has spent over 500000 for European war relief. Of this, 25000 went to Finland for civilian uses and 16000 funded medicines in London for Finland. He praised former President Hoover for coordinating with the Red Cross. The central committee has appropriated 1000000 for European war relief including Finland.

Farm Co-Ops Asked To Send Delegates To Omaha Meeting

More than 350 farmers' co-operatives in South Dakota were invited to send representatives to the Omaha Bank for Co-operatives annual stockholders conference in Omaha on December 13 and 19. South Dakota participants include B. M. Norum of Equity Union Creameries Aberdeen and G. La Moseson of Farmers' Union Co-operative Brokerage Sioux Falls. Since organization six years ago the Omaha bank has lent over $6,000,000 to elevators creameries petroleum associations and other co-operatives to aid marketing and supply purchases.

Dakota Central Seeks Franchise For Wolsey Phone Exchange

E J Lake of Aberdeen and E E OBrien of Huron presented a franchise application to Wolsey city council for a new Dakota Central Telephone Company exchange. The ordinance proposal will go to council action with an election on the measure to follow.

Magistates’ whim funds 200 Christmas dinners in New York

A city magistrate ordered Mr and Mrs James Lewis to a town dinner and hotel stay after complaints of construction noise. Public Works program to last for many years says Harrington

ST PAUL Dec 13 Col F C Harrington national WPA administrator reaffirmed that a federal Public Works program will be needed for many years to come. He noted 8.5 to 16 million unemployed and that the program will focus on national defense value projects like airports and military housing while continuing other necessary work. After a St Paul luncheon he will tour projects in Minneapolis and St Paul.

Potter Needy To Get Yule Gifts

GETTYSBURG December 13 Special Unusual interest was aroused in the fourth annual display of the year s accomplishments by the Works Progress Administration in Potter County. The professional and service division reported a wealth of clothing for adults and children and numerous toys from the recreational department. About 800 needy families are expected to be served. Deliveries will be by county youth and fire trucks in town with out of town shipments from country stations. County supervisor Mrs Lilla Setzer planned allocations in line with farm social security mother s pension old age assistance and school census lists, with special care for elderly and pension cases and individual needs. Each county child will receive a Christmas toy if otherwise unrecalled.

About 125 persons attended the Lutheran Aid annual Christmas party at the Lutheran school last Friday. Program arranged by Mrs. Marvin Friese included group and solo vocal selections. Lunch was served. The aid will meet again Thursday, December 21.

Young man injured in car crash near Holabird

Willard Giesel, 20, son of Herbert Giesel, is hospitalized with a painful scalp wound after the car he rode in overturned near Holabird early Sunday. He is recovering from injuries reported by authorities in Highmore.

The Women's Foreign Missionary Society held a Christmas party at Mrs. Lulu Dubois's home in Hitchcock on December 13. About 30 people attended after the business meeting and lesson, enjoying a social hour and gift exchange followed by lunch.
