A dramatic naval action involved British cruisers crippling a Nazi raider in a swift sea battle, with observers noting strategic impact on Allied sea control during mounting tensions in the Atlantic theater.
At Wakkanai Hokkaido today drifting bodies from the Soviet Russian steamer Indigirka wreck were found. about 350 died, 420 survivors were evacuated to Otaru. The 1100 person crew and passengers were mostly Russian fishermen and families. the ship once the American Commercial Quaker and sold to Russia in 1958.
An explosion at a military controlled cellulose plant in Zarnesti roasts eighty people and injures about two hundred. A 1060 gallon chemical kettle overheated igniting chlorine fumes as wind spreads the flames. The disaster follows prior sabotage rumors and prompts military guards over oil fields.
Leonard Ladd of Huron was elected president of the South Dakota County Agents Association for 1940 at a meeting. He succeeds W. R. Wood. Ladd has served as extension agent in Pennington and Davison counties and moved to Beadle County in 1936. N E Beers of Hand County was elected vice president, Oscar E Presetegard of Edmonds County named secretary treasurer.
In St Paul on December 14 Thatcher warns Farmers Union delegates that resolutions mean little without active financial support and staff. He says he will not accept reappointment to the Washington legislative committee without full backing and practical aid from cooperative farmers and state officials.
W. J. Jacobs of Faulkton was elected president of the South Dakota Farmers Elevator Association at its 33rd annual convention. Other officers were chosen, and several resolutions favored farmers and elevator operators, including opposition to the Fulmer bill and criticism of Farm Security Administration lending policies. The 1940 convention will be set by the board in Huron during the State Fair week.
Thomas F. Ryan was elected president of Mid-Continent Airlines at a directors meeting. Vernon A. Dorrell becomes vice president in charge of operations, with prior ties to Vega Aircraft Co and Mid-Continent.
Berlin reports the Admiral Graf Spee sank the Tairoa and Streonshal before meeting Exeter Ajax and Achilles. The battleship sustained hits and is currently in Montevideo harbor. German sources claim aim to bury 36 dead seamen and tend wounded while denying British gas use.
Senator Burton Wheeler of Montana said he may run for the Democratic presidential nomination if Roosevelt does not seek a third term. He indicated he would consider the race if the party committee suggests him, after arriving from Sioux Falls to speak to Farmers Union groups.

The destroyer Duchess I sank after a collision with 120 dead and 22 saved, the minesweeper William Hallett perished with eight losses, while subs and cruisers claimed German victories elsewhere. The Graf Spee engagement drew intense headlines and cheers in Britain.
