Factors Cited By Johnson On Cattle Prices

Brookings August dispatch summarizes J B Johnson extension specialist views from the August beef cattle situation report. He notes smaller cattle on feed in the Corn Belt, likely higher prices for well finished slaughter cattle this fall, and a potential price decline for higher grade slaughter cattle next winter as marketings rise. Feeder cattle demand may rise this fall due to corn and feed grain production, while slaughter supplies may tighten in late 1937 to early 1938.

Cattle Feeding Costs Seen Rising This Fall

Cattle feeders face higher costs this fall but overall feeding costs should be lower than last fall. Returns from cattle feeding may be somewhat less profitable than last winter and spring, though sustained losses are unlikely for experienced feeders. Beef demand is expected to stay relatively stable through 1937, with hog slaughter remaining small and beef demand remaining strong relative to other meats.
