Berlin reports the Rotary Club will dissolve next Saturday along with all other Rotary chapters in Germany and the free city of Danzig as Nazi pressure escalates. The move follows a secret meeting where dissolution was approved, amid a campaign by the Nazi high command against nonconforming groups.
Coroner Karl Vetter blamed a speeding motorist who failed to observe a stop sign for a fatal bus crash near Goshen Indiana. He had just arrived from Hartford and planned to refuel for a cross country flight to Los Angeles.
DETROIT, Sept. 1 2 Undersheriff McGrath announced Joseph Jacobs, who confessed to killing Evelyn Mack, said he intended to attack the 10-year-old daughter of his best friend but desisted and killed the child instead. He led police to a clump of weeds near the city outskirts where he left the body and confessed to crushing her skull with an automobile crank after hours of questioning. He claimed no motive beyond fear of being told on.
United States and British naval commanders discussed uniting protective strength to defend refugees on Shanghai waterway to the sea. A convoy plan would create a safe route down Yangtze and Whangpoo Rivers, amid Japanese warships and threats of air raids on Chinese bases. The plan awaits approval from President Roosevelt as tensions rise across China during the undeclared war.
Mooresville Indiana reports John Dillinger and Edward Singleton died in separate incidents. Singleton, a WPA worker, was struck by a freight train near town after a grocery store robbery in which Dillinger participated. The pair were captured and Dillinger later served prison time before his Chicago death.
